How to study abroad in England?

Study abroad in United Kingdom (UK) - England? How is life there?

  • Hi, I am from America who is looking forward to go study abroad to UK in fall 2008. I so far applied to Bristol, Manchester, and Reading. How is college student life in UK? Do people think American accent is horrible? Do you they make fun of Americans n so? I am so afraid that I won't understand any professor's lectures. How much would you spent per week (including going out + food + coffee + etc)? Thanks!

  • Answer:

We all speak the same language. You will certainly be able to understand your lecturers. We have plenty of American students here already so that won't be a problem. We've all met Americans so no-one should really make fun of you (n.b. NEVER use 'fanny' in the American way - it means something completely different here). I would suggest Manchester and not Reading. Bristol is very good too. Are you here for just a year or semester? You should already know about tution fees and student hall rents so going out is up to you, food...I used to get my weekly shop down to £15 a week. Coffee is around £2.50 a cup at Starbucks. Any more questions, e-mail me! I lived with some Americans last year so I know what their worries were.

Lol... they might have a laugh about your accent, but thats all. UK universities are (as with the U.S) very multicultural so there is someone from every background there, your not alone. It can be quite expesnive to eat out every day for example. For a coffee you're talking around a pound. I would recommend Manchester... XD

they mite laugh at your accent but that does not mean they will not like you it will just be because they are not use to that sound. most people like America in UK so you probable will not meet anyone who does not like your country. most people i know really like the states in Britain

Bristol has a thriving arts community, and Manchester, I think, is great. Not so sure about Reading. It's pretty expensive cos the dollar is so weak right now. But you probably won't have a car payment so that's not so bad. The universities you applied to should have information on their websites about cost of living & stuff.
