Do I need as passport to get to Dublin?

  • I'm from the United Kingdom. I do not have a British Passport & I'm planning on going to Dublin for a holiday weekend. Does anybody know if I will need a passport? I have a full driver's licence. will that be enough or do I still need a Passport.

    UK citizens do NOT require passports to enter the Rep. of Ireland and vice versa. From the Rep. Ireland Department of Foreign Affairs website: Passports are required for travel to all countries except the United Kingdom. (However, you should note that some airlines now require photo-ID for flights to the UK). With the exception of travel to the U.K., Irish citizens require a valid passport for travel to all other destinations in the E.U. http://www.dfa.ie/home/index.aspx?id=253 This is supposed to change in 2009. The UK's implementation of an electronic borders system by 2009 will mean the end of the UK-Republic of Ireland Common Travel Area, which allows passport-free travel between the two countries. The only time you do not need to a passport to travel by plane is if you are going on a domestic flight (including the Channel Islands and Northern Ireland) - in these cases another form of ID such as a driving licence is acceptable. However, as The Republic of Ireland is classed as a separate country, you will be required to carry a passport. I suggest you visit your local post office and apply for one. That way it's better safe than sorry.

you need a passport, i think there was a time when you didnt not too many years ago but they got rid of it

Travellers between the Irish Republic and Britain will need a passport when schemes launched by the two governments come into force. Irish officials have been asked to work on ending an agreement permitting free movement between the two jurisdictions. This follows reports that Britain is to put an electronic border control system in place by 2009 Unitil then, then answer is that you will need to produce whatever ID evidence your carier needs. Some airlines will insist on a passport anyway.

I do not know about getting into Ireland, But you sure do to get back to England/Scotland after the Lockerby Incident!

at this moment in time a drivng licence providing it is a photocard one will be sufficent the rules stating re require a passport have not come into force until later in the year. check with the airline you are travelling with first though to be on the safe side some airlines insist on passports

By plane generally if you have a photo driving liscence then they will accept that for northern ireland but not for Dublin - it s a different country!!! Do not go without checking with the airline otherwise you could be one of those really angry people on the tv show airline - Not sure by ferry!
