Can I buy a ticket for a train?

Can I buy a train ticket in England that can be used anywhere, anytime?

• If I'm staying near Coventry or Bham, can I buy a train ticket that can take me anywhere in England whenever I want, or will I have to get a ticket each time I use the train? Im from USA, so if I can get a weekly train pass or something, would I be able to purchase it online and receive it by mail? Also, can bus passes be used the same way or would I have to pay each time I get on one? Ive never been on a bus or train like that, so Im clueless :)
