How to travel with a dog in India?

I want to travel in the UK for a year with my dog, mainly staying at hostels. Advice, thoughts, help?

  • I just graduated high school, and I want to travel the UK, for a bout a year. I'm planning on staying at hostels, and staying in each place a few weeks to a month. I have a golden retriever cross, whose super well behaved, and I want to bring him with me. I'm trying to calculate the cost, and I think it would be about $25, 000 (US) dollars for a year, for the both of us, but I haven't calculated the actual travel yet. I mostly want to travel by train. The flight over is separate from the cost. I've been checking dog-related travel. Dogs are allowed on trains in the UK, as long as they're well behaved. I've also found a nice airline that will let him travel in the cabin with me on the flight over. There are enough hostels that allow dogs. I'll check them before changing areas each time. We'd be leaving after the change in quarantine, meaning as long as he had his shots and pet documents then he's good for to go. I know many people are against traveling with pets. With my dog, he loves new places, new people. He doesn't care about where he is really. He also loves traveling. Not just the new places and people, but also the actual traveling in cars, and the odd bus he's been in. He's never traveled by plane or train before, but as he loves anything new, I'm sure it will not be a problem. I'm also the one who cares for him. I left him with my parents, he would get, maybe, a walk a week. They don't train him, feed him, play with him, give him his medicine. (He has bad allergies yearly.) He would be cared for, but he wouldn't be given anything extra. He's always been my dog, since the first day I got him. I think that he'd be much happier, and healthier, with me. I'd be leaving in a year or two, after a few semester at my local university. I'm not entirely sure what I'm asking, I suppose for any similar experiences, or words of wisdom. Thoughts on my budget, and perhaps the cost of train travel. Thanks for any answers :]

  • Answer:

Your dog will HAVE to spend 6 months in quarantine - I used to work in a Boarding Kennels that had a Quarantine Section - and that is VERY expensive. Dogs are ONLY allowed on public transport and in 99% of hotels/hostels if they are OFFICIAL Guide/Assistance Dogs. Also, there are a people who rely on public transport (Tran's and buses) who are VERY allergic to animals. $25,000 will ONLY last you you 2 months if you are lucky - the cost of some hotels is VERY expensive, travel in some places is VERY expensive unless you book well in advance.

You would be able to bring your dog, however it is not possible for you to stay in the UK for a year. The maximum you would be able to stay is 6 months in any one 12 month period. You would also have to prove to immigration that you had the means to support yourself whilst you were here, and that you intended to leave at the end of the 6 month period. If you couldn't do either of those then you would be denied entry to the country...bringing your dog with you might not be a good indication that you intend to return to the US...

Have you researched your Visa? You can't stay in the UK for a year on a tourist or visitor visa

Georgia

You have not got your facts right. Your dog will have to go in quarantine for some months, you are only able to get a 6 month visa. There are not very many hostels around in the UK, and you will need a shed load of money to get through 6 months. More factual research is needed. UK

firstly, you won't get a visa for a year, it has to be six months max. not happy to find we are relaxing our rabies rules (another crazy mandate from Brussels; continental Europe has rabies, we don't) - however that's it. We'll have rabies in six months with that. find it unbelievable that you can bring a dog in the cabin on a transatlantic flight; which airline? the main issue is you don't have enough money. I like dogs but they do smell, which is why they are banned from many places. You'll also find him banned from many beaches and parks. your choice; postpone your holiday or rehome the dog.

Your main problem is that you can't stay for a year. 6 months max as a visitor and you will have to satisfy immigration that you have enough money and won't overstay. On the dog, you are right that you don't have to quarantine these days, just make sure you have checked out exactly what to do with shots/certification etc. Dogs can also go on public transport (not just support dogs). But few other public places will allow them entry, no shops, restaurants, tourist sites etc, and if you find a hostel/B&B that permits dogs you won't be allowed to go out and leave it unaccompanied in your room. It will really make life difficult, the UK is not very dog-friendly any more.

Travelling by train in the UK is by far the best way to travel. Do check out the quarantine laws with regards to your dog though

How will you get a visa for a year?

Just get a train pass, you can do it online and see all the charges, so you`ll know which is best and I think dogs travel free, Travel-lodges wont accept dogs though and there are a LOT of Hotels wont accept them (Almost all), thought some Bed and Breakfast places will.. I`d check in advance and plan in advance because you dont want to trek out to some village with your dog and be turned away and beware village bus-services are NOT GOOD, maybe 2 buses a day if you`re lucky, you may be better off going to a Holiday-camp and some allow dogs.. Haven I think allows them, look online., or a very good place to start is DOGSTRUST UK and they have a whole site dedicated to Cottages and properties that take doggies. Be aware that Taxi-cabs are VERY EXPENSIVE so I`d personally plan the whole trip out in advance. Englands not as small as you think and its VERY expensive to get around., I`d stay in one place if I were you or get somewhere near a nice beach but we aware not all beaches are dog friendly either.. I`d go Cornwall on a nice Caravan or Chalet site.
