How to Obtain a UK indefinite?

How difficult is it to obtain citizenship in the UK?

  • I'm an American student wanting to possibly live in the UK for the future. I'm only a freshman in college atm. So I was just wondering if there was a website or something that could help me possibly transfer to a university in the UK, or at least maybe move over there after I obtain a degree. (Currently pursing one in Economics). So I was wondering how hard it might be for me to get citizenship, or to even get a foot on British soil.

  • Answer:

Your years spent as a student in the UK do not count towards your residency requirement for UK citizenship The easiest way to move to the UK is to get a Masters in the US and work for at least a year, then apply for the Tier 1 visa that doesn't require company sponsorship. You initially get the Tier 1 for 2 years, then renewable for an additional 3 years. After 5 years legal and continuous residence and passing the Life in the UK exam, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (permanent residency). Then a year later you can apply for citizenship.

It's pretty hard when you first start out, with the money and such. But you will get used to it :)

This website should answer all your questions.. http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/britishcitizenship/ Also, you might want to check with your college to see if they run any exchange programs that might allow ou to spend a year at a UK university as part of your degree. That might help you get a feel for the place.
