Why people from Gibraltar call themselves British and say that Gibraltar is part of UK?
-
I have seen Gibraltarians calling themselves British and saying that Gibraltar forms part of UK, when UK is only England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. I'm Spaniard and don't get me wrong, I don't mean that Gibraltar should be part of Spain or whatever, I just mean that they should accept reality, that Gibraltar is not UK and that they have their own government as an indepent country they are and that people from there are just Gibraltarians, neither English nor Spanish but Gibraltarians because they don't even have British passport, citizenship, representative and votes in the British government. I have English family and they just laugh when they see Gibraltarians claiming to be British, Is Canada, whose monarch is Queen Elizabeth II part of UK? lol

Answer:
Gibraltar isn't an independent country, I'll just clear that up for you. It is administered by the UK but I do agree with you that they're not British. They are British Overseas Territories Citizens (BOTC's) and more specifically Gibraltarian.

Gibraltar is a British overseas territory and not an integral part of the United Kingdom. However: Gibraltar is under UK sovereignty and the relationship between Gibraltar and the UK is at the sole discretion of the United Kingdom. In 1981 the citizens of Gibraltar were granted full British citizenship. Gibraltar is in the European Union and since 2004 its citizens are allowed to vote for the European Parliament as a part of the United Kingdom.

I presume it is like people from the Falklands. I presume that both would rather be classed as British than have any connection to either Spain or Argentina. It is beyond my understanding, but their madness cannot be easily explained.
Gibraltar is not part of the UK it is a British Overseas Territory. People in Gibraltar however do have have British Nationality (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_nationality_law) and they hold both British Overseas Territory Citizenship and British Citizenship. So they are British. Canada is a different case because it is a sovereign country. Gibraltar is the modern equivalent of what used to be called in the British Empire and Dominion (now a territory) which means they are British self governing but out side the union. Gibraltar could be choose to be sovereign but they want to remain a British territory for defence and foreign relations interests but also because they probably fear being absorbed by Spain if they did gain independence
They say that they are British because THEY ARE BRITISH. The OED says that "British" includes "British subjects" Wikipedia says, "British people, Britons, or Brits, subjects of the United Kingdom, of the Isle of Man, one of the Channel Islands, or of one of the British overseas territories, and their descendants" Gibraltar is what used to be called a "British Colony" It belongs to Britain, so it is legally British. Sorry but it is just a fact. There are some racist undertones to all this. Perhaps the 'Johnnies' / Juanitos should stay in the shade a bit more.

You do know there is a difference between the UK and Britain, because you seem to be using the terms interchangeably. The simple answer is people from Gibraltar call themselves British because they are British. Just because you don't understand why doesn't make it incorrect.
dunno, should probly just be an independent country, in fairness, so should alot of parts of spain also.
