How much money should I bring to England?

  • This April, I am going on a 9 day trip to England with my school (most of our time will be spent in London, but we will also visit Bath and other cities). All of our hotels and travel expenses are included in the trip fee, but I don't know how much money I should bring for spending cash. Also, do you recommend a specific way of carrying it (i.e cash, debit/credit card, etc.)? And anything else you think would be helpful for me to know, I have never been out of the U.S before so any advice about England and touring there would be most appreciated

Hi , i am a born and bred Brit and i am sure you will love your visit to our country.Everything over here can be quite expensive , especially in London but seeing that your accommodation etc is being paid for then it should not be that obvious to you.Simple answer to your question is to bring as much as you can comfortably afford and i would recommend using a debit card to pay for gifts etc and you can also use them for cash withdrawls from atm machines .You will enjoy London as it is perfect for tourists and has something for everyone , Bath is also a lovely place but so different from London .The further North you go the cheaper things become and our land becomes alot more rural with magnificent natural landscapes such as the Lake District in the county of Cumbria where i live and also the Yorkshire dales and of course Scotland. It would be good if you could eperience the many different parts of the country as it has so much to offer and i am sure you will love your time here as many many Americans have in the past . Enjoy your stay.

use your ATM/Debit card-for cash withdrawals- getting cash from your credit card usually means Bigger Fees ( most likely you will have fee for the ATM's but it will cost you less - best check with your Bank and Credit card company for Fee information Big Note: please Call your atm & credit card companies to tell them that you are using them out of the country- you will avoid getting your account Flagged and your card being invalid---- the UK & Europe have chips embedded in their credit cards- USA ones don't - you may have problems using your credit card at transportation places ( trains/underground) or smaller stores- most larger stores/theater ticket booths will take them though Avoid changing dollars into pounds at Money Exchange places- they charge high commissions and you won't get the best rate-- If you must do exchange use a bank or the post office

Bring a little in cash but the major credit cards are widely accepted in England. If you are planning on visiting quite a few cities in England our rail system is dense and frequent. Rather than buy individual tickets, a Britrail Pass will save you money www.britrail.com www.nationalrail.co.uk (Timetable information)
