The United Kingdom is made of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The biggest of the islands in the British Isles group is called Great Britain. This contains the countries of England, Scotland and Wales. The island of Ireland contains Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland (Eire). The Republic of Ireland is not part of the United Kingdom. There are various other islands within the British Isles that are not part of the United Kingdom but do owe allegiance to the Queen. These are the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands (Jersey, Guernsey, Sark, etc.). There is an overarching United Kingdom government based in London. All the countries and islands in the British Isles have their own local or national governments except England.
