How to divide up london/edinburgh trip?
-
my mum and i are going to london next summer, and we were thinking we would also take the train to edinburgh. it's going to be about an 11 day trip. we've been to london before, but it was brief. do you think we should spend about half our trip in london and half in edinburgh, or should we spend more time in london? we were also thinking about doing a day trip to stonehenge.. (is it worth a look?) any input appreciated.. TIA!

Answer:
5-6 days is alot for Edinburgh. You should be able to see most of the main sites there in about 2-3 days. Scotland is absolutely lovely, however-- especially that time of year. You should consider a drive to the Highlands. You could do 3 days in Edinburgh, followed by 2 days in Inverness or thereabouts. I would recommend 5-6 days in London (although I lived there for 4 years and never ever got tired of it :). 'Mainstream' sites not to miss: The Tower of London-- be sure to wait the few minutes for the Beefeater led tour. You get to see parts that arent open on your own, and the guides are charismatic and hilarious. And its FREE! Westminster Abbey-- call in advance to book the (FREE) verger led tour. You will get a great voiceover to key sites and will see parts of the abbey that you cant go into by yourself, The Royal Mews, Depending on when you are there, you can get tickets to tour Buckingham Palace--only open to the public a few weeks per year when The Queen is away on holiday, The Globe Theater-- fabulous! Off the track sites to see: The Burough Market-- a great food market, Spitlefields market for fabulous shopping and upcoming designers, The Holly Bush in Hampstead (possibly the best pub in London--just a few minutes tube ride from central London), catch an outdoor concert at Kenwood House (Hampstead), Shakespeare in the Park (Regents Park), Shepherd Market (lovely little square hidden away right off Piccadilly-- like a slice of old London right under your nose!), The Cow (wonderful Pub in Notting Hill)

three days is enough for Edinburgh. Stonehenge has not much left to look at, just some piece of standing stones. if you like history, it may worth it. try a small city call Bath, i think it is a very interesting place, a lot of history and beautiful architecture.
