American watching Law and Order: UK?

  • This is my 1st time watching this show...my 1st time seeing inside a British court. Do y'all really say "My Lord" to the judges? Isn't that blasphemy? And, the wigs...do lawyers and judges really wear those wigs or is this for TV? It all looks a bit ridiculous to me (no offense, the show is great) And, on TV a suspect in a murder said he's never seen a gun in real life (is that really possible in your country?????)

    My Lord is not blasphemy since Lord was a title under British Rule below the King. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord Yes they wear wigs and its not just for TV. The show is quite factual, just like the US version. Gun control is incredibly strict in the UK so it is very reasonable that someone has never seen a gun well into their adult years, except on the internet or TV.

It is usually only worn in high court (serious trials if you like). It is often worn at the judges descretion through, when the trial involves children (divorce, abuse etc) they often don't wear the wigs to make it less formal and frightening. Only judges and barristers can wear the wig, normal lawyers (what we call solicitors) don't wear them. it is an old tradition and old traditions die hard in the UK. And it is Lord as in Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen. Not Lord god.

'Lord' isn't blasphemy as it is a title. Yes, judges and barristers wear wigs. And no, the overwhelming majority of the UK populace have never seen a gun. I've never seen one. A simple google search would have told you all this.
