How are people from Belfast called?

I am from Scotland, they call me Scottish. People from Wales are called Welsh. So how come i can not call?

  • I am from Scotland, they call me Scotish. People from Wales are called Welsh. People from England are called English. So how come it is frowned upon if i call someone from Pakistan a Paki

  • Answer:

I dunno Scotty! Ok, no one else has got the answer, or my quip either. The reason you don't say PAKI. Is because PAKI is offensive. But why i hear you cry? PAKI is associated with PAKI B@STARD. And this was typically daubed on the outside of people's businesses and homes. So the term PAKI has never been used in an affectionate way, but very often in a derogatry way. This is why the pakistani community don't like it - and we should respect that. Good question.

Erm, really? Come on now. I am from Scotland too, and grew up knowing that the term "Paki" is often used as a racial slur or insult. You must have known this too, seeing as you gathered it is "frowned upon". Calling someone "a Paki" is very different to calling someone Pakistani. Its more like calling someone " a Jew" or "a ******".

To Be Honest. If Pakistani's dont like being called Paki's where is the issue? We simply just dont call them it. It's not so much that its frowned upon - Pakistanis just dont like it. Therefore this should be respected. It also shows a sign of lazyness. Pronouncing the whole word is only 2 sylables longer haa :P Just as a Wales person is called a Welsh. A pakistan person is called a Pakistani A welsh may get annoyed if u called them a 'Wel' cus you couldnt be bothered to put the 'sh' on the end haa :) BY THE WAY, just for everyone reading, this comment in no way was aimed at the person asking the question. I just felt like witing a little essay ;)

Because that is generally a slur in the UK, as you well know. There are also rude words people use for the Scots that aren't used in polite conversation. Would you be fine being called by those? Just use Pakistani. Or perhaps their names?

I think it depends on how you say it. You might object to a non-Scot calling you "Jock" if they meant it in a derogatory way. However, a non-Scot friend calling you "Jock" in fun would not be offensive.

you would say a pakistani you can say paki but they might get offended

littlecampbell2

i guess they are not proud of where they're from.

I've kinda wondered this before. The suffix 'stan' just means 'land'. Scotland=Land of the Scots, England=Land of the Angles, Poland=Land of the Poles. Just as Pakistan=Land of the Pakis, Afghanistan=Land of the Afghanis, Uzbekistan=Land of the Uzbekis. You get the point. However, I think the problem with Pakistan doesn't so much come from themselves. It comes from all the other nations people from that neck of the woods being called 'Paki'. Just like I don't appreciate being called English when I'm actually Scottish. It just doesn't really offend me that much, I certainly don't deem it a racial slur, and that's why I have a problem with calling someone a 'Paki' being deemed a legal racial offence. It should be as much of a legal offence if someone calls me English i.e. none!

Because its 21st century British political correctness gone mad. "Paki" is just an abriviation of Pakistani like I would call you a "Scot" being Scottish would you be offended? I seriously doubt it.
