Rent accomodation in London (UK) for 1 month at a cheap price?

To any UK people here, could you help me with the current prices of things in the UK????

  • I live in the US, and am wanting to compare the prices here to those in the UK. I am wanting prices not for really expensive places like London , but just average town prices. Please, could you tell me the price you would expect to pay for the following items ????? Small Studio apartment with utilities (rent for one month)? Modest groceries for one person (for one week)? cheap bottle of red wine ( 1.5 litre) ?? pint at a average pub (Guiness for example)??? pack of cigarettes ???? petrol per litre??? anything else basic you think you would need to buy to live on to exist? (clothes for example)

  • Answer:

Ignore the previous respondents, the facts are as follows; Rent: (furnished) £350-£500 (Unfurnished) £175-£275 (Local taxes always extra at £75-£200) Groceries: If you spend more than £25 per week, anywhere, for one person you are paying too much. Wine: A good Chilean Merlot will cost £2.99-£5.99. Pint of good ale: £1.75-£2.95 (working mens clubs are always the cheapest) Cigarettes: £4.15 cheapies. £5.65 Marlboro. (20 pack) Petrol: £0.93-£1.09 per litre (av. £1.00 per litre) Hope this is an accurate answer as there are many regional variations. Sharing a flat (or apartment) is a cheaper way of doing things but you take a risk of sharing with someone you don't know. I have never had a bad flatmate! On top of this, add cost of travel to your place of work. Weekly travel tickets are available and cost about £10-£15, assuming you live within about 15 miles of your place of work. Britain is an expensive place to live but bargains can be had if you know where to look. Out of a monthly income of £1,000, my total living expenses are around £600. So I clear 40% profit from my job. Can anyine beat that?

Just a tip; you can shop online with most uk supermarkets. Try visiting one of the websites and filling a basket with your normal weekly groceries (including washing powder, toiletries etc). It might take a while, but this should give you a pretty accurate idea of the price you would actually be paying for food, wine etc, based on your own shopping habits. Try Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons... they're the most popular. You can probably find most of the other information online too. You will find that the UK is expensive compared to the US. However, I should imagine that variation in the typical wage between the two countries would go some way toward balancing this out. To help put this into perspective, I believe the minimum hourly wage in the US is $5.85, but in the UK it's double that, at about $10.79 (£5.35). Whether you're thinking of visiting the UK, or if this is just for a homework project, I hope this is useful!

Average house - £180,000 - rent for an apartment per month - £500 Pack of cigs - £5.00 Petrol per litre - 96pence Cheap bottle of red wine - £3.00 Modest groceries for one person each week - £25.00 not including cigs and alcohol Clothes are cheap for the time being, but costs are expected to rise as China stops sending them to us!

Hack The Planet!

This can be variable to the area you want to live in. In London I would say an apartment would be Studio £600.00-£800.00pcm Wine - £4.00 Guinness £3.00 Cigs £5.50 Petrol, pass don't drive Food - £30.00 pw Theatre in London can be anywhere between £20cheaper seats up to £60 for top seats Films average £10.00, but you can get cheaper out of London Clothes depends on what you want, there are many fairly inexpensive shops around ones like Primark Jeans average price £10.00 Polo shirts £5.00

Think of the price they pay in the USA and double it.

Look on the bright side.

Small Studio apartment with utilities (rent for one month)? Not sure, but educated guess, maybe £400 p.m - depends on the area and if it is furnished or unfurnished. If you want the ultility bills (gas, water, electric) included then perhaps a bit more. If you want to watch a TV, then you'll need a licence - thats £135 a year. If you want a phone that will cost as well, ditto internet access, satelite TV, etc. Modest groceries for one person (for one week)? Allow somewhere between £20-£30 I guess - depends if you're a meat-eater who wants to enjoy the odd piece of steak or whether you are happy with beans on toast! This kind of figure would allow you the odd treat without keeping you in the poor-house. cheap bottle of red wine ( 1.5 litre) ?? About £5 probably for a bottle this size. pint at a average pub (Guiness for example)??? A pint of beer can be anywhere from £2.50 upwards. pack of cigarettes ???? Cheap nasty supermarket own-brand makes (superking size) about £4.50 for 20. Proper brands such as B&H, Marlboro, etc - anything above £5 for a pack of 20 and rising fast all the time. petrol per litre??? About 95p a litre at a supermarket forecourt, rising to about £1 a litre anywhere else. (unleaded)
