Will copies of birth certificates suffice to travel by airplane without state issued ID's?

Who is authorised in UK to certify copies of birth/marriage certificates for immigration purposes?

  • I need certified copies of my birth and marriage certificates to send off for a visa application to emigrate to Australia, the form doesn't state who in the UK can certify the copies, does it have to be a solicitor or can it be an accountant/doctor etc. any help much appreciated

Hi, You can take them to your local Bank, who will photocopy them and certifiy them for you for free! This is probably the easiest, as you probably visit the bank regularly?

Certified or legal notary. Ask at your solicitors for the address of the nearest one to you.

For immigration purposes it would be best to get it certified by a solicitor. I would not be too sure about using bank managers, doctors, teachers etc. If they are really fussed then you may need to get certified copies from the registry

The Foreign & Commomwealth office have a system whereby you send the documents to them and they apply an apostile to the document thus making it a certified certificate - I needed do this this for my application for residency in Croatia - it does not cost very much and they are fairly quick in returning the documents - you can log into their website and they have full instructions etc with application form - this is the best and cheapest form of getting any document certified as it is accepted by all governments anywhere in the world
