Finding a name change deed from UK?

  • I live in the US but at one point in the UK around the age of 5 my name was legally changed to match the name of my mothers husband. I still carry that name today and my US drivers license and social security card show the name as it was changed. The US has only known me as the changed name. My paperwork, birth certificate and change of name deed were unfortunately stolen when someone broke in. I was able to get a relative in the UK to send me my birth certificate but it still has my name from before it was changed. Does anyone know if it will be important to find a change of name deed. I am a US perm resident/alien and at some point in my life, plan to become a US citizen just haven't saved the money to do so.

  • Answer:

Is you mother or step-father still alive ? or ask the relative in the UK to help, if you know the rough date and the place where your name was changed I am sure the relevant records office can get you a copy of the paperwork.

"I was able to get a relative in the UK to send me my birth certificate" why not all they need to do is apply to the registrar where you were registred for a copy.... or you could do it yourself costs you more than it would them http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
