Where is the best place to live in England?

  • I want to move to England after college and wanted to get some opinions on the best cities and towns. Is London a good place to start off my career? (I'm not entirely sure of what I want to do just yet but I am looking into urban planning) I've heard london is really expensive, and I'm not sure if city life is right for me.. I was thinking a town in southern England... Well, I am basically undecided and not quite as educated on the subject as I could be. I know there are plenty of Brits out there... Whats your opinion? Explanatons would be fantasic as well.

    I would opt for Devon. It is wonderful culturally, has great scenery, a vibrant night life, great arts. For me it has it all and I'm moving there from London as soon as I can.

I'm going to tell you about Bristol, a city with a population of 500000 in SW England. Bristol is lovely. Mostly at least. Try not to live south of the river, unless it is Southville or something. We're quite close (about 45 minutes) to a nice seaside resort called Weston Super Mare and a couple of hours by train from London. We have lots of green space within the city, but at the same time you can go from the centre of town to farmland with sheep and cattle and the like in 15 minutes or so, and we also have 4 farms within the city that are open to visitors. We have a brand new shopping centre (Cabot Circus) with restaurants, a cinema and housing etc. opening in September, which will create a lot of new jobs. It will be next to Broadmead, which is the main shopping area, so we will have one massive shopping area, as well as the out of town shopping centre called Cribbs Causeway. Unfortunately, our public transport here is more than a bit cr*p. It's expensive and the timetables are a joke. Fortunately, the buses do come fairly regularly within the Bristol City Council area, but good luck trying to get anywhere on time by bus from a village in North Somerset, South Gloucestershire or BANES. The route of the problem is that First has a virtual monopoly over transport services in the city. But don't let the bus service put you off, we have lots of history, culture, shopping, multiculturalism, festivals, and we were found to be the smiliest place in Britain ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2776971.stm ) so :D
