I'm American and I'm wondering if women in the UK are treated equally to men?
-
In the US, women are very defensive of their rights to be equal. Don't get me wrong, we love men and most of us desire the traditional nuclear family situation (husband works, wife raises babies), but when we are single, we make our own money, we have complete control over who we date and marry and when we marry, we expect our husbands to respect our needs to still be independent. (Go out with the girls/see family whenever we want) We consider it an abusive relationship if one person is too controlling of the other. Of course we are talking generalizations here, but I'm just wondering if women in the UK are the same. Or is it a little more "traditional," like the man is in charge?

Answer:
The short answer is "no". There are still instances where women are paid less for doing the same job as a male colleague years after equality legislation and where it is more difficult for a woman to advance in her chosen career. On a personal male/female relationship level, women are probably inclined to be more assertive and independent than our grandmothers, because in most cases women are no longer dependant upon a man to provide.

I'd say the UK's actually better in terms of equality between genders than the US. (Of course an American would of have to asked this though lol).

Women in the UK are fiercely independent. I don't know a single woman in the UK who has or expects a traditional family where the husband works and the wife raises the babies. They do exist, but not amongst anyone I know. But I know 3 women who work and their husbands are the ones taking care of the house and kids.

they are equal, but there are more sluts :P
hi, men are the same the world over, the problem is you have a child and your job is not important, men have this weird idea they are in control, what you are saying is true, but it does change when you marry> having said that family and friends are not a problem in england,. its accepted as normal.

It depends on the people, but I've always been in very equal relationships, and I'd never have it any other way. As for the idea of giving up my job to look after babies... erm... why?! How's that equal? I'm well trained and well paid, and I want children but I wouldn't give up my job for them.

its about the same
