Are you allowed to pitch a tent almost anywhere in the UK?

Are there any camping sites in the UK that allow you to pitch your tent in the woods?

  • im planning a camping trip with my mates and i would like to know if there are any places in the uk that allow camping in the woods. i have been camping before and i did not like the idea of loads of tents all around us, i know you can pitch a tent in a reserve in scotland but is there anywhere else?

    The Forestry Commission has plenty of camping sites in places like the New Forest in Hampshire, the Forest of Dean in west Gloucestershire and so on. On these sites they may be a lot of other people but you won't see much of them because you tend to be in small little clearings of your own. However they, like many campsites will probably be closed for the winter season. Most sites re-open from around Easter to September/October. Why do they close for the winter ? Oh yes! Its that thing called the weather. By the way, many campsites do not accept single sex groups.

Generally, it's not a good idea to pitch a tent in woods at all. Doing so will mean that if it rains, the water will drip onto your tent from branches above for a long time after the rain has stopped, putting your tent at risk of losing its waterproof qualities. It's also quite noisy. Although I can understand that you don't want to camp with a ton of people around you, I wouldn't recommend camping in the woods if you like your sleep to be dry.
