How far in advance should I start looking for a job if I plan on moving to England in June 2011?
-
I'm planning on moving to Bristol, England from California in June of 2011. I would like to work there and try and get sponsored. I have a lot of experience in clerical work. I was wondering how far in advance should I start looking for a job? I would also appreciate any moving advice, such as: how much money should I have saved up, etc. Thank you!

Answer:
If you have a US passport you will not be permitted to work in the UK. That is the simple answer to your question. 00

Unless you have a string of Masters and PhD degrees and an exceedingly special work skill, you cannot get a work visa in England. Unemployment is high there...I am sure there are many people with clerical skills unemployed. Also...the UK belongs to the European Union and ALL citizens of other E.U. countries can live and work in the UK without a visa. This puts Americans at the end of an endless line. There are about 30 million unemployed Europeans. Employers must offer available jobs to Europeans first. Only if they cannot find a UK citizen or other European for a job, can they then offer it to a non-E.U. citizen. See site below. You need to have on open mind and look for another option.

You can not just up sticks and move to any part of the UK or even the EU. All citizens of the European Economic Area have the right to work here without the need for a work permit. As an American citizen you would need to have a Master's Degree or a skill that is in high demand here to even be considered eligible for a work permit. Even if you could find a job with a sponsor who is licensed to employ non European citizens you would find yourself at the back of a very long queue of people looking for work here... All the rules and regulations can be found here... http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk/

This question has been asked here a million times. Why do people think they can just turn up in a new country and get a job? The simple matter is you will not be able to get a work permit for the UK. You need a job first, and your employer applies for one on your behalf. Due to strict immigration rules, you will not be eligible for a visa for clerical work. The UK Border Agency - look it up.

You need a work permit first. With the recession and everything, I would get started right away. Make sure you have some money saved for ur rent b4 u head out.
