Do I need a passport to fly from Glasgow to Dublin?

Do you need a passport to fly to and from england to ireland (dublin)?

  • As ireland is part of the united kingdom i wondered whether you need a passport, im asking because my mum is turning 50 this year and wanted to get a flight and hotel in dublin for her as a surprise as she's always wanted to visit Dublin. I see her passport has just expired and asking her to renew her passport will ruin the suprise all together

Ian M is correct. You don't officially need any form of ID to travel between the two countries. Ireland and the UK are two separate countries (you'll get yourself lynched saying that Ireland is part of the UK, only Northern Ireland is!!). However, they do form part of the Common Travel Area. This is an agreement between them that their citizens can travel freely between them without immigration control. Ryanair do insist on passports as ID for even domestic flights within the UK as they can't be bothered to train their staff to deal with people any differently whether they are flying to Italy or Ireland. The other airlines that fly to Dublin from the UK are British Airways, BMI and Aer Lingus. All three will accept a UK photo driving licence as an alternative to a passport.

Dublin is in Eire and Eire is NOT apart of the UK. UK citizens can travel to EIre with just a photo ID if you travel by road, rail or ferry. Ryanair insists on passports on all it's flights even though it's not a legal requirement. Other airlines will accept Photo ID so don't fly Ryanair. Ian

You don't need a passport, but she will need to be able to prove her identity. A Driving license would do.

The republic of Ireland is NOT part of the UK, and has not been since 1921/1922 I suggest you contact the foreign office, or ask at a reputable travel agent

ireland is not part of the United Kingdom. Only Northern Ireland is. Technically you don't need a passport to fly within the European Union, you just need a form of identity, however some (amend to my previous answer) airlines will ask for a passport as a form of identity, so in reality you may need one. Check with the airline whether they require a passport. (and don't accuse the Irish of being British, they won't like it!!!)

If you're flying on Ryan Air you will need a valid passport. If you are travelling on any other airline check with the airline

David S

Not required for customs but the airline/ferry company will.
