I need to hire a car in England, but now live in Spain?

• We now live in Spain but want to hire a car when we visit the UK. We still have UK plastic licences which give our old UK address but have lost the paper part which we would need to produce when hiring a car. The UK licence is still valid in Spain as proof of competence to drive, but how can we legally hire a car in the UK with just this plastic licence, as I can hire a car in Spain on the strength of it with no problem. I have the option of paying by UK Visa or by Spanish Visa cards, though using Spanish Visa costs more when hiring a car in the UK.

  This shouldn't cause you a problem if you hire directly through one of the big car rental companies or through one of the major brokers. You just need to make sure your pick up time is during the office hours of the DVLA. When you get to the counter explain you've lost the paper portion and the car rental company can request the DVLA to fax through a copy. They usually charge a small administration fee for this of about £5. The car rental company can then check for points / disqualifications. It a fairly common occurrence and all major car rental locations should be familiar with the procedure. Note. This only works in the UK.
