What are good tent camping locations in the Midwest?

Camping in Scotland?!?

  • I'm planning on taking a camping trip to Scotland beginning in Jan. '08. A backpack, tent and some MRE's... :D Are there any legal restrictions on camping anywhere you want in Scotland? And can anyone recommend some "must-see" places or good wild camping locations? Time span is about a month... Thx for the advice... Oh and what is the weather like? Should I definitly pack rain clothes?

  • Answer:

Definitely pack rainy weather clothes!! I stayed at Blair Athol Caravan Park which has a camp site this year, the same weekend as the International Horse Trials, it was lovely.

Your camping in Scotland for a Month in January? Oh my! Make sure you take PLENTY and I mean PLENTY warm clothes. Yes lots of rain clothes. Its freezing up here right now. There are lots of campsites over the country although you need to watch that you dont park your self on some private ground. Try Pitlochry its lovely there and has a great campsite

Yea people are saying rain clothes but it gets bloody cold at night time, so long johns or whatever are a MUST! Lol As for sities http://www.scottishcamping.com/ Good Luck

You are kind of crazy you know. If you camp in the Highlands you're going to want to think about an igloo or snow shelter rather than a tent!!! But, on the plus side, Scotland is fairly lax on wild camping: http://www.outdooraccess-scotland.com/default.asp http://www.thehappycampers.co.uk/campsites/wildcamping/

Seriously evaluate weather or not you have the right equipment for camping in Scotland at that time of year. Unless you are a very capable camper I would highly recommend sticking to populated areas or leaving it till at LEAST April, although the past few years even april has been thick with snow - winter happens later in the year at the moment. It's not just rain & snow you have to worry about, it's strong winds and freezing conditions as well as isolation (and very poor mobile reception) if you're going to the highlands etc. People die on our mountains, it's not for the light hearted!

I really can't believe you'd consider camping in Scotland in January - it's absolutely freezing. Unless of course you're some kind of professional freeze artist..!! Places to camp.... Loch Lomond is always worth a visit - and not too many "locals" round at that particular time of the year to spoil the peace and quiet!! North East of Scotland, the Angus coast line area is beautiful as well, although best visited in the summer months. Lot's of luck and enjoy.....
