Can Any Formal System Prove Its Own Consistency?

Doesn't this prove that the UK's 'First Past the Post' voting system is a joke?

  • Northern Irish election results 2010: Sinn Féin - 25.5% of the vote - 5 seats. DUP - 25% of the vote - 8 seats. And they wonder why Catholics in Northern Ireland feel the voting system isn't fair to them... When will the UK grow up and adopt a PR system? How can this even be called democracy?

  • Answer:

Whilst I certainly believe our system needs an overhaul and PR seems to offer a fairer system, I have some doubts. Historically, European countries that have traditionally had a PR system have rarely had stable governments. Infighting and changing alliances often meant that politics became more important than policies. We have had some some horrendous results of PR systems within Europe. It can lead to dangerous minority groups seizing power. When we vote for a first past the post system, we are voting for (or against) a specific manifesto.

It's not a Catholic vs protestant thing, it's just one example of how unfair FPTP is to the majority of the population. Just look at the number of votes each party had to receive to get one MP: Labour: 33,350 Tories: 34,990 SNP: 81,900 Lib Dems: 119, 790 UKIP: 917,800 votes no MPs BNP: 563,000 votes no MPs In other words, the voting system is designed to keep Labour and the Tories in power and everyone else out of it. Hopefully Clegg can force whoever he teams up with to reform the voting system.

As much as I despise Gerry adams I see your point (sorry was in the British Army), the whole UK system needs to be looked at. Northern ireland is a complicated issue! Was in Belfast for 2 years and loved it, both catholic and protestants were top people but you got some very naughty people on both sides.
