Is medical school in the US too long?

Is it easier to get into medical school in England (or UK) than US?

  • My brother somehow thinks I can't get into medical school here in US (not a good reason tho except he thinks im stupid but my gpa is currently 3.4 now in junior year) and thinks I gotta go to another country and doesn't know what I would do if I really can't cuz US schools are competitive. So if for some reason I really can't get into it here, is it easier to get into UK or England medical schools than US? I'm just looking for other options if I can't get in here. Also if I try UK or England, what go I need to know?

  • Answer:

The competition for places on medical and dentistry courses at universities in the UK is extremely fierce. Only the very best get in. Most universities require applicants for such courses to do an online test called UKCAT. It is extremely tough. I would say you have more chance of going to the Moon then getting on such a course in the UK. Sorry !

Of course it isn't easier. Medicine and dentistry are difficult courses to get on anywhere in the world, they are always oversubscribed and only the very best applicants get accepted. If you can't get accepted in your home country it is unlikely you would make the grade to be accepted anywhere else, in fact it would probably be more difficult if you take into account fees, cultural differences and visa issues.

It's harder to get into school in the UK than the US as a US citizen. Not only are medical schools just as competitive to begin with, but there are only a limited number of spaces allocated to international students. You would be competing against the best students from all over the world to get into a school

UK schools are also competitive. You need the grades. If you dont get the grades you wont be going. If you struggle with work at junior level, you honestly dont have much of a chance becoming a doctor.

It's extremely difficult. I know somebody who has just gained a place. Not only did he need top grades, he had to prove himself by voluntary work in hospital, gaining a Duke of Edinburgh's Award and becoming a Queen's Scout
