What are paralegal salaries in the United Kingdom?

Is there a big difference between The United Kingdom and The United States?

  • Ok, so im from Detroit michigan, in the united states and am thinking about going to grad school some where in the united kingdom (England or Scotland most likely). But i would be there for 2 years and would be leaving alot behind for that amount of time (for example, family, friends). So my question is, is the united kingdom alot different than the united states? The reason i would like to go, other than for the education, would be to experience another culture. Are the people, places, and overall culture alot different than the USA? Would it be worth it you think?

  • Answer:

About the only thing you will find the same is the rubbish US fast food places.............. we both speak English, although sometimes that is debatable.......... almost anything and everything else is different, the people, the countryside, the attitude, the pace of life ( even within the four countries of the UK)...... the island mentality...........if you do decide to come, don't get stuck into the thinking that London is the place to go.........get out and see the real UK, you will find it VERY expensive.........................

There is a big difference. You may know it as the Atlantic Ocean.

Big difference. The British are great though- you should definitely go to school there if you can. The UK is great country, absolutely beautiful. You need to understand the basic cultural differences before you go - for one, they are super reserved - the absolute and complete opposite of the extroverted American. I can't emphasize this enough. The food is VERY different, completely edible though and non-controversial. They have like a million different kinds of meat pie --it's a curious phenomenon, but quite good and worth a try. British Beer is GREAT!! You will never drink Bud again, I know I can't. Believe it or not, as long you aren't overly annoying, they seem to find most Americans very tolerable even though they dislike our accent. Most will say to me "Americans are a good bunch" - I think in Britain that is a really high compliment. You should go for it:-).

VERY different

Not as big a difference as some people might expect. Some people like the change others don't prefer it. It will probably just depend on what scene you find, who you get to know - just personal stuff.

In many ways, the countries are similar. But in other ways, you might find it hard to settle in. 1. While the language is the same, the accent of us Brits is different to the American accent. There are also several modifications you Americans made to the English language when you took it up. Things like 'toilets' instead of 'restroom'. It will be worthwhile to practice saying the UK English at all times, so people understand you properly. Oh, and we don't speak all posh and snooty, that's just what you lot think of us. 2. The food is not incredibly different, but you cannot deny that the English are somewhat... more healthy than you Americans. I hope I haven't given offence, but what I mean is we don't eat fast food all the time and usually eat vegetables with meals. We have a giant range of cheeses in Britain, like Stilton and Farmhouse Cheddar. I don't think there's anything that you could get in America that you can't get here, though. 3. I've noticed that in the USA people have strong religious beliefs. All religions are tolerated in Britain, but you don't HAVE to come to church every Sunday unless you want to. Strangley, I've also found that you are a lot more friendly than us. The English leave people who they don't know alone, unless you're going to go to the same school as them or something. There's also the matter of healthcare. The NHS insures everyone in England free health care. I hope I helped, good luck if you do move to Britain.

I can't really give a definite answer to that. The British culture is certainly very different to American culture, but the gap is getting smaller and smaller. The people might not seem as friendly overall at first, but once you get used to British ways, you'll fit in pretty well. And the places are definitely something to see! You've got history here, compared with the sort of things America has - churches and villages and statues and buildings dating back to AD 100 or whatever, and some of the architecture goes back to even before that! Take Stonehenge, for instance. It's been there for hundreds and hundreds of years, yet is still standing tall. Not to mention all the beautiful English countryside - there's a reason they call it "England's green and pleasant land"!

Not a lot really. Brand names in supermarkets mainly. I think it was Groucho Marx who said that, " Rich people are just like us, they just have more money". p.s. As I live in Spain , I can understand the immigrants in the US, I cannot do that in England.

Well, The UK is tiny compared to America. Of course there are differences, the language. As the other person said, you speak American English, and you really need to know the proper English English;-) So we can understand you... but then, we know what most of the words mean anyway. "Fries= Chips" "Crisps= Chips" "Restroom= Toilet" etc etc etc, The history here is a lot older, the nearest town to me (5 miles from me) Is a old Roman Town.. that kind of shows you the kind of architecture you find here. I find that a lot of Americans are religious, the British, not so. You can go to church/equivalent if you want, but a lot of the population don't. It's VERY expensive here at the moment. OOoooh, we don't have these "posh" accents.. well some do, but not many. Hahah, don't have these stereotypes in your head when you come here, they're so annoying! We don't all have buck teeth and drink Tea!!! Personally I'd recommend England... this is all coming from a 15 y/o in England. :-) Good luck anyway!
