Why do some people often assume that Ireland is in the UK?

Why are you surprised? I've worked is US and most folks don't know what's in the next state. One guy I worked with thought that the US civil war was about the argument with Mexico over Texas.

Because it Is! UK is a shortened form of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Eire, aka, The Republic of Ireland is a separate country. Logistically, Dublin is often included in UK tours, visits and so on. Just like some US countries have a region called EMA. (Europe, Middle East annd Africa). As to your comment on Americans. I fear for the future of the US. They seem not to understand geography any more. They seem to only have a vague grasp of the English language. Many do not believe in Evolution, believe that 9/11 was an inside job and that Obama is a muslim born outside the US etc. etc. War is God's way of teaching Americans geography. Ambrose Bierce

Why do some people assume that the UK, is just England? The UK is a Union of England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland, the UK is not even a Country. ( it's a union ) Why do some people assume that Britain is just England? Britain is a island with 3 Countries on it, England, Scotland & Wales.

Face it, nobody outside Ireland cares. As far as I'm concerned, you should be grateful that Ireland is thought of as being in the UK. Makes you seem like less of a reject.

It's called ignorance ! Sadly the World is populated with people who are blissfully unaware of the importance of independence coupled with democracy . Despite the violence and bloodshed over the years Ireland's independence was a triumph for the fight against the imperialism of a bigger neighbour ( and I am not Irish ! )

Well i studied in France for quite some years and the text books that are being used are very old and show Ireland as being in the UK, it's all about what you learn as a kid in school! (i spent quite a bit of time correcting geography text books and class maps...) What really bugs me is the use of the term "British Isles" to refer to Britain and Ireland. It was voted recently to ban the saying but is still being used in the UK and the rest of the World!
