How did Americans respond to internal and external challenges?

Challenges for Americans in England?

  • For a course that I'm taking, I have to write some challenges that a soccer team of Americans would face in England. I can't find the answers on the internet, and I've never been to England. Here are the questions. 1) Write two scenarios illustrating sources of interpersonal conflict members of the traveling team are likely to encounter and at least three effective strategies for handling each conflict. 2) Write two scenarios illustrating teamwork and diversity challenges members of the traveling team are likely to encounter and at least three effective strategies for handling each challenge. Thanks in advance!

  • Answer:

    1) Don't say soccer. No one in England plays soccer.

Do your own homework.

1) Interpersonal conflict. (i) One of the team is keen to take his medicinal supply to England with him, but is aware that there may be weight restrictions on his luggage. Noticing that one of the other members of the team is carrying less weight than he is, he slips a small package into the other guys bag before they go through the customs check at immigration. Personal conflict arises when the person who has unwittingly transported the package finds it and disposes of it in some way on the grounds that it must by rights now be his. (ii) One of the team is keen to have a night in and get his head down by writing a letter or two, reading a chapter from the 'Pilgrims Progress' in bed, then putting the light out. Three other members of the team have felt obliged to offer hospitality to a couple of young women who they met in the dance club across the road from the hotel, and have kindly offered them the chance to stay in the hotel room with the guys until the trains start running again in the morning. Personal conflict arises when they disturb the sleep of the guy who stayed in. 2) Teamwork and Diversity Challenges (i) The football team are waiting for a train at a London mainline station when one of the players feels hungry. His team-mates contribute their small-change and purchase an object described as a Pie at the station buffet. Before he is prepared to put it in his mouth, the first player declares that he will only do so if he has some idea what it contains. Teamwork strategies are used to devise physical tests and to identify possible sources of information on the contents and edibility of the object. (ii) The football team are proceeding along Oxford Street when they observe a small crowd gathered around a man at the side of the street. He has a box on which is a piece of green cloth, and three cards - one of which he assures the players is, in fact - the Queen of Hearts. He recites a small rhyme starting 'Here's a game from Nanky-Poo, the Red for me the Black for you' while moving the cards around. He then invites a member of the audience to pick a card, which when turned over reveals itself to be the Queen of Hearts. A sum of money is then given to the lucky spectator. Following this, he suggests that the football team increase their funds by placing money on the table and attempting to follow his cards in the same way. Each member of the team contributes a £10 note to the pile, making a total of £110 pounds. Teamwork strategies are used to decide which of the cards is the one they are going to pick when the man with the box stops shuffling them around. Further teamwork strategies are used to decide how to spend the likely winnings. ++++ ++++ ++++ I have not done the answers for you - that would be cheating, but I have at least given you the challenges. I expect you will be able to work out some answers by yourself.
