How much does an Oyster card cost?

How much money does it cost when you go on a train with a oyster card?

  • when you travel at train station and you have to beep your oyster card on the ticket things how much money does it take off, so yeah how much does it cost when you beep it at a train station?

  • Answer:

It depends on how many fare zones you go through - this is why you have to touch out at the other end as well, so the system can calculate where you have been and how much money to take off. All the fares are at http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14416.aspx So a short journey on the tube in central London for an adult is £1.90, and it's more if you go further. If you don't touch out, the system doesn't know where you've been, so it assumes the worst and charges you the maximum fare for the day for all zones. This is why there are so many posters around telling you to touch in AND touch out. See also from that page that there is a daily cap. If you do trips in one day that cost more than the cap when you add them together, you only get charged the cap amount and any more trips you make that day are free. This is so you don't get disadvantaged compared with someone who bought a Travelcard for the day - which is only fair.
