Suggestions for places to visit in the UK in March?
-
My wife, 16 year old daughter and I will be in the UK in March for 2 weeks, will probably rent a car, and plan to travel between relatives in Edinburgh, Cardiff and London. Being from Canada, we're used to all kinds of weather, and driving long distances. We enjoy hill walking, visiting historic sites and museums, and exploring small villages. We also enjoy some of the popular tourist attractions. We've visited several times before; here are examples of some of the places we've previously enjoyed: Central London (museums, usual tourist sights) Brighton (Pier, waterfront, Royal Pavillion) Dover Kew Gardens Hampton Court Palace Greenwich Observatory Thames River by boat HMS Victory at Portsmouth Stamford Dorchester Conwy Angelsey York Pateley Bridge, Yorkshire Windermere Tintagel, Cornwall the Eden Project St. Andrews Edinburgh Royal Mile, Castle, Arthur's Seat I'd be happy to visit some of these same wonderful places again, but would really appreciate any suggestions for new places to visit. In particular, ideas for places to visit near Liverpool and Manchester, the Peaks District, and North Yorkshire (eg, Harrogate - Ripon - Yorkshire Dales) would be most helpful, as well as in Scotland. Our schedule is such that we won't likely stay more than one or two nights in any one place. We greatly enjoy the UK, and look forward to our next visit!

You have been to some very good places but you have missed out the two jewels in the crown. First there is The Lake District in Cumbria, Northwest England. The scenery provided by the lakes anf fells (mountains) is absolutely breathtaking. This is the fell walking capital of England. Get hold of guide books by the legendary Alfred Wainwright. Second there is the 630 mile Southwest Coastpath which includes the World Heritage Site - The Juraassic Coast. The section from Swanage to Weymouth in Dorset is stunning as is the Cornwall section. In the Yorkshire Dales try a drive down Wensleydale, stopping at Aysgarth Falls. In Manchester try the Imperial War Museum North near Salford Quays and walk across the footbridge to see Media City and the Lowry Centre. In North Yorkshire Richmond and its castle may be worth a visit. In County Durham drive up Teesdale from Barnard Castle, stopping at High Force ( the biggest waterfall in England) and also Summerhill waterfall. Then onwards over the tops to Alston. This is recognised as one of the world's great drives. In Northumberland in the far Northeast of England drive the coast road south to north from, say, Alnick to Berwick. You may wish to stop at the castles at Alnwick, Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh and the simply wonderful Lindisfarne on Holy Island (not an island at low tide). I hope I have given you a few ideas to reseach. If you wish, click on my profile, establish contact with me and email me. I can provide you with further details and places and maybe send you some photos for you to evaluate them.

Hill Walking:- Near London. The Surrey Hills, The South Downs, the Chiltern Hills A number of national trails cross these ranges of hills The Greensand Way (Surrey Hills) The South Downs Way (South Downs) The Ridgeway (Chilterns) www.nationaltrail.co.uk I would also highly recommend the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire. There is a great trail along a disused railway line from Bakewell to near Buxton and lots of very challenging paths based on the Pennine Way starting at Edale www.visitpeakdistrict.com and the South Shropshire Hills - the Long Mynd, Wenlock Edge, the Stipperstones, Mortimer Forest www.visitsouthshropshire.co.uk (Stay in Ludlow or Church Stretton) In the South Downs the most beautiful place of all is the Kingley Vale Natural Nature Reserve, north of Chichester (West Sussex). There is a car park in the village of West Stoke. Kingley Vale is the largest Yew tree forest in England with many trees thought to be several thousand years old. It is also partly elevated with stupendous views. Follow the trail marked with numbered posts.

South Wales, The Gower Coast, a must is Three Cliffs Bay. You must visit Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons, South Wales, the most amazing views on a bright clear day. North Wales is also worth a visit, Beddgelert, Portmeirion, pretty little villages.
