Can I get a British passport?

Can I get a British Passport if my Grandmother was born in Scotland?

  • Hi all, I live in Australia and was just wondering if anyone knows the answer to my question. I have called the British consulate in UK and Australia and they couldn't give me an answer but they want me to put in an application. Now, applications cost $200 and if your application is rejected you don't get that money back. My grandmother on my mothers side was born in Scotland and i just want to know if anyone can decipher the http://ukinaustralia.fco.gov.uk/en website and tell me... Am i eligible for a British passport? Thanks,

There is a Wikipedia article that tries to explain British citizenship law, but warns the issue is complicated: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_nationality_law#Dual_nationality_and_dual_citizenship You probably need legal advice before applying. Good luck!

I'm pretty sure Citizenship can only be passed on by a Parent who is a citizen by birth or naturalization I'm sure though you can apply for an ancestry visa, and that allows you to live and work in the UK then you need to live here for 5 years, working and paying taxes before you can apply for citizenship
