British Passport rights in the EU?
-
So I have a British passport, and I am considered a British citizen even though I live in Australia. I was planning on moving to Portugal for a couple of years bu I am majorly confused with what rights I have. I was always under the impression that I could freely live and work in any other EU country, but I just heard that Britain does not have the same righs as other EU countries. When i was in Britain 3 years ago, there were Polish people on every corner, I also worked with a couple who didn't need visa's, they just needed a Polish passport. Can someone advise or direct to a site that gives clear information about working and living rights among the EU nations. Cheers

Answer:
The United Kingdom is a full member of the European Union and British citizen have the same rights than citizen of all other full Union members. What "guiri" tells concerning passports is simply not true! That British citizen need to have a passport is based on the fact that the U.K. together with Denmark and Ireland does not issue national ID cards to their citizen, hence they need the passport to travel in Europe. Whenever those countries issue national ID cards to their citizen, they can use it for European travel same as all other Europeans can do. The U.K. starts issuing national ID cards and they also can be used to travel to Portugal. http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/travel-advice-by-country/europe/portugal?ta=entryRequirements&pg=4 .. You will not get certain rights and benefits that British EU passport holders have who were residing in the U.K. before they moved to Portugal, like getting free health care or unemployment benefits. The attached website gives excellent information in regard to your rights and duties as EU citizen in Portugal. You can move freely about the EU as you would have in the UK. But As a Brit, you DO NOT have the same rights as citizens of countries that signed up to the Schengen agreement. To say you do would not be helpful. For example, I live in Spain and do not have, (and cannot get), an ID card although it is a legal requirement to carry one. I use my EU photo driving licence. Spaniards use their ID cards to travel to England, but I cannot. I have to use my passport. You will have to use your passport at first. One thing to watch out for is health insurance. If you have a doctor in England, you can get an EU health card to get free medical care in Portugal until you sign on to the Portuguese social security system. If not, you must buy medical insurance until you get on to the Portuguese system or take out a private scheme.. Remember Portugal is surprisingly backward in some places.
