Is scotland still beautiful in the winter? is there any green?

Where to stay in Scotland in the winter?

  • I'd like to stay in a cottage somewhere in Scotland where there'll be snow (not interested in skiing), wildlife and some interesting places to visit - thinking of February time - any ideas? Had considered Inverness or Loch Ness areas but open to better suggestions........... thanks

Inverness and Loch Ness are really nice places. But it alll depends on whether you want to be snowed in or not. I like Perthshire. You're pretty central there and you can travel to other destinations from there. There is lots of country side and you'll be able to hire a cottage. No promises there'll be snow though, more likely to get rain!

Ballater or Braemar are very nice that time of year but are perhaps a little remote & can be cut off for days during really bad snow.

The further north you go the more likely you'll be of getting snow. Aviemore is a great skiing resort so you're usually guaranteed (as much as you can be!) to get snow there.

Anywhere in the north east, probably north of the great glen to be in with a chance of some proper snow. I've lived up this way for just over a year and i love it. We have buzzards nesting in the trees where our well is, so we get treated to some amazing displays by them, we have badgers living close too. I used to live in the south east of england and thought it was great to see a bird of prey now and again, but up here you see lots of different types every day. The north east coast line is truly stunning, from aberdeen up thru peterhead and fraserburgh, amazing on a wild stormy day! You could go to the black isle and see some dolphins. I think they're there all year round, be best to check up on that one. Enjoy your stay in scotland!
