Has anyone moved from the UK to France recently?

Recently moved back to the UK. Was it always this awful?

  • I have just spent 7 years working abroad, mainly in Germany and then Italy, and I have just recently got back to the UK. I did come on the on odd weekend visit, but apart from that I haven't been here since the end of 2003. I'm living and working in Yorkshire, where I'm from but I have been going through major shock at coming home. Was the UK always this dirty, I mean there is a serious litter problem in most town centres. It's disgusting! So much of everything looks shockingly scruffy and run down. Why doesnt anyone do anything? Were the english people always so cold and unfriendly? I live in a middle class suburb and the people here seem barely human they are so cold, they just flatly ignore you like youre invisible, but in the city centre nearly everyone looks totally rough and scary, you can't even look at anyone or you get attitude. Service in the shops is often downright rude. There are hardly any cafes apart from Starbucks, otherwise it's pubs full of students and townies getting smashed, why is everyone getting drunk constantly? Last weekend I went to London, to see if it was any better there, but it was even worse, a totally agressive city and extremely expensive, the only people with normal manners were the tourists. Was life here always this horrible? Has anyone else been through this? Are there any friendly, normal people in this bloody country?

I can't wait to get out of here, you're not the only one. Where I live, it's nothing but sectarianism and violence. Most people feel safer in their houses than being outside.

I think you've gone to the wrong place. Where I live there's no rubbish or litter. Everyones friendly and the weathers great. There's loads of cafes and places to go n Some people are just so rude and ignorant. No where perfect, no matter where you go

7 years away all the younger generations have grown up now and when they were young life was poo now they making most out of everything more generations soon to come no one looks out for the youth ;\

If the last time you were here was 2003 then it can't have changed that much. I can't defend Yorkshire because I've never been there but my city isn't that scruffy at all and the people are ok (def not rough or scary). You're making a sweeping generalisation by saying that the locals are rough and scary and the tourists are nice. You're just whinging about a situation that isn't that bad so congratulations, you fit right in with your fellow brits :).

Normally I would say come up here to Scotland but unfortunately it is the same as England except we are friendly. The UK is in such a state because of the unemployment and immigration and I do not see it getting any better in the near future. I think everyone in the UK is so depressed because of the state of the country with crime, bad housing and unemployment. You could always give it a try and come up to Scotland for a friendly chat. Yup i'm afraid so !!! But you always noticed a huge difference when moving back from another country, even when you come back off holiday it all seems boring and dull here.
