Where is the cheapest place to live in England?

Where is the best place to live in Northern England?

  • I am looking to relocate to the UK in the next couple years but I would appreciate people's opinions on where they believe is the best place overall to live. I know there are some nice places in the south but I'm looking specifically at Northern England because my wife is from there and she would like to be close to her family (Northern Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside or thereabouts). Please give good clear arguments why you believe it to be a great place to live, not just a one liner, that would be much appreciated! Thank you all!

You can't beat Cumbria , for it's outstanding natural beauty , or the lovely High Peak in Derbyshire . Both areas are within easy reach of Manchester and other cities . Parts of the Fylde coast have got elegant properties and fine scenery, notably, Lytham- St-Annes. Yorkshire is wonderful , too. I love West yorkshire , around Todmorden and Hebden Bridge, for its quaint rural charm , stone houses , great pubs and friendly people (think ' Last of the Summer Wine !) ha ha

Southport in northen Mersyside. It is a lovely seaside town, great town centre, great night life and some great homes that are modern, spacious and/or affordable. Great links to the cities of Liverpool (40 mins train) Manchester (1 hour train) and Preston (30 mins road). Great atmosphere around Southport. Lots of sports stuff going on eg. water sports and we are a Cycling town now so we have loads of good cycle lanes etc. Lots going on: Music festivals, The Southport Airshow, Flower show, Southport comedy week, Southport Musical fireworks display plus LOTS more. We have a water park, theme park, great shopping streets, a lake (to play water sports), cinema, bars/clubs/reseraunts/hotels/conference hall/theatre. Lots going on. Fabulous parks, beaches (Ainsdale), wildlife areas etc. Great schools. Has THE top state college in Nothern Mersyside. Plus private education not far away. Oh and don't forget we have the ONLY lawn-mower museum in the UK. It's worth a look... seriously it is. Final word: Come to Southport. Any more info about the town look at my link or feel free to e-mail me at anytime.

Mr. Hello

You don't need to stick to N.England. You could always look at places in S.Scotland like Dumfries+Galloway and the Borders. There's a much lower crime rate and the general 'family friendly' lifestyle is better than nearer the N.English cities. Even from Dumfres you're still only 100miles-or-so from Manchester
