Travelling around England, I would like to know where are other great places to visit within England (apart from London of course)

Answer:
There are some real hidden gems in England if you can get away from London. Country side: Northumberland - Hadrian's Wall, Druridge Bay Lake District - especially craggy Borrowdale Norfolk Broads - Blakeney is nice Devon/Cornwall Yorkshire Dales Towns/Cities Durham City - really beautiful historic city Lincoln - another gorgeous old city Cambridge - great little city Alnwick - voted the best place in England to live, previously quiet market town but now very much on the Harry Potter trail :) I'd recommend reading Bill Bryson - Notes from a Small Island for an incite into regional differences and typical types of British town.

Oxford, Cambridge, York, Durham, Lake District, Bath, cotswolds, Kent. If you have time you should definitely come up to Scotland and visit Edinburgh and the Highlands.

Brighton is the best place to go apart from London. The Sea, the shops, bars, clubs and stuff. Apart from there everywhere else is real dull!

I would avoid London altogether if I were you.. its very unpleasant. You get a much better impression of what the UK (not just England) has to offer if you spend your time in some of the places listed above. Do not miss the Lake District or the Yorkshire Dales. If you must spend time in a city you would have a much nicer time in Edinburgh than London (though of course this is Scotland, not England).

Check out Ireland Dublin is a great place friendly, good night life, and good shopping if that appeals. Then there is Southern Ireland if you get a chance visit the giants causeway this part of Ireland has the Irish pace slow,no worries, and we can wait until tomorrow, again the people are wonderful. There is Devon and Cornwall if you fancy a surf then Newquay is a surfers paradise full of real cool surfers. The coastline in Devon is worth a wander over. Bath for its history and architecture. Scotland has a wonderful history and of course the Loch Ness Monster the lochs alone are spectacular. Then there are places like Ironbridge in the north. Alot of places to see other than the capital. Hope you have a good trip and enjoy.

If you are going in August head for Scotland and the Edinburgh festival. You will have a fantastic time. If not it's still worth a visit. It's not just steeped in history, it's a buzzing, vibrant city. Bon voyage.
