Where are some really quaint inexpensive towns in England?

What are two cities/towns I could use to compare in a paper about the North-South divide in England?

  • I'm an American studying abroad in England, currently doing research/writing a paper on the North-South divide in England and how it compares to that in the US. I don't know much about the different cities/towns, so if somebody could give me a good example of a "Northern" and "Southern" town which would be beneficial to my paper, I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

  • Answer:

Liverpool in the North West of England ,which at one time was a Huge seaport ,and Southampton in the South of England another seaport ,both city's have undergone massive rebuilding projects since the 1950s and share a depleting workforce due to economic cutbacks .

So you want to prove or attempt to prove the ignorant stereotype...................... I was born in the Midlands and studied in London and was horrified to hear the Southerners who thought it was a different World 'north of Watford' with less money, grime and dirt, full of uneducated people and all it showed me was how little they knew and they stayed where they were as they felt safe........... I had never heard any such rubbish said in the Midlands about the south....maybe we are better educated and travelled and I have friends who live in Leeds and Doncaster, Durham, Liverpool and even in Scotland and the only thing that is moaned about is the lack of investment...not a North/South divide....that really is a true Southern thing............. Northerners just get on with it, they are made of strong stuff and do their best with what they have.......of course the more something is said the more people pick up on it and think it is the 'norm'

Burnley- It used to be a textile town, and did okay during the Industrial Revolution, when it got loads of factories. But since imports from other countries became common, now it is a poorer area, and had to be given extra grants by the government. Detached house average price is £110,000. In the North. It has 5-7 stations, and is an example of the highs and lows of the North. London- It was always important, being a centre of trade since the Roman times, and was later the capital. Many rich people live her, but also many poor people. Detached house average price is £600,000. In the South.

But what are you trying to prove ? There are affluent towns in the north and in the south. There are poor towns north and south as well. If you want to be highly selective then maybe Castleford as a poor town in the north and affluent St Albans in the south but its a very artificial choice. It doesn't prove anything.

Royal Tunbridge Wells, and Barnsley. They're as different as Chalk and Cheese. The first in the south east, and the second in the north.
