What symbols/logos/iconic things represent Whitley Bay and/or Newcastle?
-
I'm looking to get tattoos to represent my heritage. Already decided on an Irish harp to represent my mother on my left wrist. My father is from Cramlington, but says he lived in Whitley Bay to most. I don't know if that's cause it's the same place pretty much or cause it's the closer well known place. Anyway I'd like to get a tattoo to represent the area. Friends have suggested a magpie or St Mary's lighthouse. These are my backups and I don't particularly want anything football orientated. Also white ink for the lighthouse wouldn't show up well so it would be shaded which wouldn't go so well with the coloured harp. Ideas people? (Please don't tell me that tattoos are stupid or anything like that. This is MY body and my choices. Any comments along those lines will be ignored)

Answer:
Cramlington and Whitley Bay aren't the same place, Cramlington is Northumberland - not Newcastle - and Whitley Bay is Tyne and Wear. So Newcastle-themed iconic landmarks etc. like Tyne/Millennium/Swing bridges or a magpie might not work (magpie is also strongly linked to Newcastle United football club). If you really want to take Whitley Bay to represent your heritage because your dad lived there a while, I'd not really say that's to do with heritage myself, then he should surely be able to give some ideas of something that represents his time there and what is important to the family. Whitley Bay is a bit too specific - I'd suggest going more for something to represent Tyne and Wear or Northumberland...maybe just an outline map of the whole area. Obviously St. Mary's Lighthouse or Spanish City Dome (maybe the female lead figures that sit either side of the dome) are the most well-known symbols of Whitley Bay, the only other things I can really think of are the Seafront clock or Chris Brammall`s Clock. Another idea would be using some of the old Whitley Bay tourism posters - go for Art Deco or Pin-up aspects...or an old-school Whitley Bay tourist stamp. Whitley Bay was a tourist town, and now as a bit of a party town, little else.
