What is Newcastle Upon Tyne like? Would it be worth moving there instead of London?

I had a Londoner tell me it was feral and full of chavs, and not to risk going there, but I had someone from Leeds say it was great. I'm an Aussie coming to the UK for a working holiday and I wanted to go somewhere I can work, live and put aside a little bit of money to go on occasional weekend trips abroad. The rent is a lot cheaper in Newcastle than London, but I still want to go somewhere vibrant and fun. Is the work situation there tougher than London? Any help and info (or even suggestions on other places which would be good and cheaper to live than London) would be greatly appreciated!!

Answer:
Newcastle is okay if your life is centred around drinking and nightclubs. Its low on cultural activities and climarically it is in the coldest area of England. Devon is beautiful scenically - 2 national parks Exmoor and Dartmoor and pleasant seaside resorts. Lots of visitors in the summer. Quiet in the winter. One of the mildest parts of England

I went with my wife to Newcastle recently, we found the city clean, the people very polite and keen to help, Some people in London are shallow and do not knw how to communicate, they are self centred (Like some Aussies). But to be honest go to newcastle, find accomadation away from city centre, the infrastructure is great and cheap.

Newcastle is a great place to live! There are chavs everywhere in the country and Newcastle is no exception but this does not mean everyone is newcastle is a chav! They are a minority. Newcastle is known throughout the UK for its nightlife and was dubbed The UK Party City by MSN. You will have a fantastic time if you live in Newcastle and it will be a hell of a lot cheaper than London. Also, Devon is lovely but it is countryside, and i dare say there is not much nightlife compared to the bigger cities. I hope you enjoy your time in the UK! x

If any English city is feral and infested, it's London. Most Cockneys seem to be completely oblivious to this fact. Newcastle is a great city. You could do a lot worse. Yes, the weather is crap for most of the time. It's crap everywhere in England for most of the time. If weather is a serious concern, I'd assume you wouldn't be moving to England in the first place. Devon is nice, but it's more expensive than Newcastle, very few job opportunities in comparison and no nightlife to speak of. Newcastle is cheap, friendly, vibrant and generally safe. People often wrongly assume that the only form of entertainment there is getting drunk. You can have a night out if you want, but there's plenty more besides that. Museums, art galleries, amazing modern and historical architecture, two massive shopping centres, a vibrant music scene and pretty much anything else you could want from a large city. You're close to fantastic beaches and beautiful countryside. And you won't find many people who are friendlier and easier to get along with than Geordies. Honestly, London is a filthy, extortionate, crime-ridden, depressing hell hole in comparison to Newcastle.

Hi , given the choice i would pick Newcastle every time , ok London has a lot going for it with all the tourist resorts etc but living there comes with a price , everything is very expensive down South and it is much cheaper to live up North.Newcastle is also a large vibrant city with everything you could possibly want , a great nightlife and great friendly locals , it is an easy going place to live with a good pace of life , as most places over here jobs can be hard to find during the current recession but there is always some work out there if you look hard enough . Make the right choice and you will love it over here,

Newcastle v London. Newcastle wins on everything other than work. It's harder to find work in Newcastle. How many minutes is it to the seaside from London? How far beautiful countryside? Newcastle is a fun and vibrant city. It's a nice size, you can walk from one side to the other. The people are friendly and there is loads to do. It's a historic place, and literally only minutes from beautiful beaches, awesome countryside, great shops schools, a main line train station, an International Airport and has things like Hadrians Wall nearby.

Londoners have great misconceptions - I have lived in the Durham area, between the Tyne and the River Tees, all my life. Feral and chavs seems, to me, to be a contradiction in terms. Sadly, unless you are a newly qualified professional, such teacher, solicitor, or doctor you may have difficulty finding work. Not only is rent much cheaper in Newcastle but a nice, roomy, semi or detached house will cost only half as much as a similar property in the city and comes with a garden, albeit a small one. The big advantage is that you can get to country or coast, with sandy beaches, in a very short space of time. Newcastle has a vibrant nightlife and historic Durham nearby and York is only a little over 50 miles away. Good luck. 'God bless. Gladgran.

everything about newcastle is great! The people, the way of life etc. Another nice small town nearby (about 25mins by train) is a town called hexham which is great. I visit newcastle 5-6 times a year because we have friends there andthey say they always wish they had moved a little further out like hexham, prudhoe etc. :) Manchester is also a nice place :)
shame your an aussie ..because in newcastle there are women who can drink any aussie under the table .and will have no trouble in arm wrestling you into the local motel ..and they are good looking too ..so go to newcastle .but be prepared never to leave ..you have been warned !!
