Of Manchester, Liverpool and Sheffield, which is the better student city?
-
I'm an American planning on attending a British university to get my degree in anthropology and archaeology. I think I've narrowed down my choices to the Universities of Manchester, Liverpool and Sheffield, but because I can't just up and visit the UK to visit a school, I need to learn as much as possible about each individual city prior to making my decision. I want to study in a city, but I know I need to stay away from southern England because of costs. My ideal city would be a city where I could get around by walking, biking or using public transportation (not too interested in driving). I want there to be a strong culture in the city and pretty prominent sub-cultures within the city. I'd also love there to be some nice green spaces in or around the city, but they don't have to be everywhere. Just a few parks within walking distance would be nice. Concerning nightlife, I'm not going to spend loads of times in clubs and bars. Sure, I'll go to a bar on occasion, but I'd rather enjoy myself in a bookstore or simply taking a walk thank getting drunk.

Answer:
All cities will offer what you want. Maybe Manchester and Liverpool are better than Sheffield. But it ALL depends what course you are doing. Manchester University is the third highest performing university in the UK and Europe (19th in world). So Manchester would be the best choice for education. However Liverpool have far better culture and things to do/see that Manchester. Personally I would choose Liverpool and guess what I am in a couple of years. You may not understand the Liverpool accent at first but its unique to the city, God luck and I hope your stay in the UK is a good one.

All three have a great deal lot in common - all were massive cities during the Industrial revolution - suffered decline in the late 20th century and have had a lot of investment and regeneration. The universities in all three have good reputations and long lists of "firsts" for each so: Sheffield - on the East side of the pennines - is a very hilly city if you're walking around. was originally the main steel city in the UK. I had several friends there at Uni back in the 80's and I enjoyed going over to see them - someone else will have to fill you in on what it's like now. Manchester - on the other end of the Snake pass across the pennines. Originally a massive workhouse of the industrial revolution - particularly in the textile trade and heavy engineering. Getting around the city is fairly easy with the tram system - night life not bad at all with a prominent gay scene around the Canal street area, some large parks and good shopping. Liverpool - still even now one of the major ports in the UK - UNESCO world heritage site waterfront and brand new shopping city centre development opened last year. City centre walkable and a good bus and underground network. More museums theatres and galleries than any city in the country outside london and european Capital of culture 2008 - big party town with stag doos and hen doos all over the place - and a lot of green spaces too. I'm biased obviously cos it's my home town - but i think its the best of the three. Recent student survey found it second in the country for "cost effectiveness" for students - ie when prices and availability of casual work for students is considered. Brighton actually came top in that survey.
