Job opportunities in Manchester?
-
After i graduate, i'm planning to move out of America & stay with my family for a while, over-seas in Manchester England But i'm not entirely sure what i even want to be when i grow up. Just something in the journalism field. But here's the problem: I want to keep my American citizenship, so would that make it harder for me to get a job? i'm not completely against changing my citizenship of course, but how hard would it be to change it back to American? (for the record, i am extremely proud of my country, i just need to know what would be easier for getting a job, i'm planning on staying in Manchester for a long while) also, are there good job opportunities there? or are there other affordable places i could go? (i have family all over, but in small towns only) or if any one has any other suggestions for me i'd be so, so great full! oh, and another place i was really hoping to go was Bolton so if anyone has any information on that, or a type of job i could get, places to live, i'd really appreciate it! thank you so much in advance! :)

Answer:
Bolton, Greater Manchester . I can't think of a better place for you to begin your hopefully long and happy residence in the North of England. The people - funny, hospitable, down- to - earth, helpful The town- interesting, urban, with good shopping, some striking buildings, oh, and an awesome stadium, used mainly for matches involving the home- team, Bolton Wanderers Getting About - Manchester is 30 mins by train or 20 mins in the car. and that's a world- class city, withevery amenity and loads going on all the time. beautiful Lancashire countryside on your doorstep, and the sea only 1 hour away. ( you haven't lived til you've seen Blackpool !) See if you can watch Peter Kay on You Tube - he's their top comedian, dead funny Now, I don't know anything about the legalities of you finding or keeping a job here, so it's top priority to get all that clarified before going any further. If you make it, you'll love it here , especially Bolton. ( Y' might need t' interpreter at fust, tho, lass , or tak course in yon lanky speak )

As an American who moved to Manchester in 1998, I can say it's extremely difficult to find work here. Americans aren't entitled to stay longer than a few months without good reason (eg student visa) and are not allowed to seek employment. I came over on a student work visa from the BUNAC scheme, but this has been withdrawn. Even with my work visa, it was difficult to find permanent work at first. People won't want to hire you if they know you are only here for a short spell. That means temping, which can bring a steady paycheck but also means less pay and fewer benefits than permanent workers. I was able to stay after my visa expired because of my relationship with an Englishman. Even then it took me 4 years to become a permament resident and I only received my citizenship/right to vote last year. It took a lot of paperwork (with a solicitor's assistance) and hundreds of ££ to sort. Unfortunately moving to England is not like moving between states. If you have immediate relatives here they might be able to sponsor you, the Home Office link below has more info. As for Bolton...mmmm....I'm sure it has its nice places and you have your own reasons for going, but if given the choice I'd rather stay at home and clean the fridge LOL
