Nice affordable areas to live in Cheshire.

Which is the best suited area for me to live in?

  • Hi everyone, So I am looking for a nice place to live in the North. I am originally from the south of England. I initially had my eye on Didsbury, I have heard that it is nice and stylish, one of Manchester's best places, and expensive but a lot of people have also said that it is loud, people sick on your doorstep, robbers heaven, too much traffic, too many chavs etc. I would really like an area that is quiet and leafy, safe (if possible) and a nice balance of people, families, single people, like a conservation area but without too many snobs etc. I DO NOT WANT anywhere that is full of neds, RUDE BOYS/ GIRLS, robbed easily, intimidating or where you find sick on your doorstep on Sunday morning, or too SNOBBY. Wherever this place is I want to be within 1 hour tops of a city! I love a city atmosphere and I love shopping!!! but I also want a retreat which is the area I am looking for, it must have good transport links (regular trains or trams as buses get stuck in traffic). My areas I am looking at are: Whitefield, Prestwich, Sedgeley and Ellesmere Park, Stockport (dunno which bits some help appreciated) Didsbury. I am also looking at Harrogate in North Yorkshire or maybe some parts of Cheshire (Wilmslow, Alderley Edge around there), but I really want to be in the north west if possible. So in short, from the places that I have mentioned and from what I have asked can you suggest a good area to live. I know I sound picky, sorry but I really want to find a good area, I understand i won't find everything I want but somewhere close. Thank you in advance xx

I am biased, as spent many happy years in Prestwich ( Sedgeley IS part of Prestwich; very orthodox and getting a bit run down to be frank ). Whitefield is good, in parts, but do your home work! The first ever homes in Greater Manchester, built for £1 Million, were sold years ago in the Ringley area of Whitefield. Parts are not that wonderful, around The Hillock Estate to the east of the tram station, but nothing too awful! Why live in Didsbury when you could live a stones throw from a metro stop in a good part of Prestwich (look over by the Heaton Park side too; near the park and the tram station!") or in Whitefield?? I considered Ellesmere Park, back in the days moved from London to Prestwich. Is a great area, but a bit far from the tram for my taste. Didsbury would be more expensive and more transient with a longer bus ride or drive into the city centre. In Prestwich and Whitefield you have the well established Jewish Community and an established community feel across the board. When I moved here it had to be Greater Manchester's best kept secret! It is less of one now, but many are surprised how close we are to things.

Didsbury is still your best bet. The good parts of Didsbury arent rough at all. The students nearly all live in Withington and Fallowfield. North Manchester is nearly all families and it isn't very lively, so is Cheshire and Cheshire isnt so good if you want a night out in Manchester, you would either have to pay a fortune in taxi fares or drive.

Bury, which includes Whitefield and Prestwich/Sedgeley Park has the lowest crime rate of all the boroughs that make up the county of Greater Manchester. I would look beyond Whitefield and up to the town of Bury itself, most of it's more desirable areas are to the north and west of the town centre, some of which start to become semi rural village type areas. Manchester city centre is still only 25 minutes away on the Metrolink from Bury town centre. Housing costs and council tax are much more sensible than those of districts to the south of the city.
