    I just got from Watford to Lancaster for £14 yesterday, booking with London Midland although part of the route was with Virgin trains. Watford-Birmingham £5 Birmingham-Lancaster £9 That cheap ticket involved long waits for connections and the journey was done overnight but I got the ticket at one day's notice. Better routes and times are usually more expensive. Keep checking on Virgin Trains or London Midland websites and look at prices for a split journey like mine . The cheapest I could find booking Watford-Lancaster as one journey was £52.

Check with Trainline. They sometimes have offers depending on day and date. Fridays are normally premium days. Might be worth splitting your tickets (Is a bit messy but can work) by looking at services to Watford from mainline station (or change point from Chester) and check where the train stops en route. Check fares between 2 points and if a standard ticket costs more than 2 half journey ticket using the same train, then book two part journey tickets. In the same way, check single journey ticket between Chester & Watford as often 2 singles are cheaper than a RETURN. Nobody knows why.
