Last minute 4-day trip to London. Tips?
-
Ok so we book some good hostels for our 1st and 4th day and we'll be taking off morning of the 5th day and money isn't really an issue. Also wondering if I should carry mainly cash or just debit or half and half. Should I exchange currency home US or abroad there. So what can I do for 4 full days in London and possibly exploring the countryside, Wales, and a bit of Scotland or maybe.. just maybe Paris. What do you think? Tips and help and advice. Traveling all up and down UK, just London, or Paris too? Any tips and advice helpful:)

Answer:
Four days isn't much time. You really need to stay in one city and explore it. If it's London you can take day trips to places like Stonehenge, but realize the trip really will take the whole day. Same for going to Paris. You certainly do > not < have enough time for "Traveling all up and down UK". London is a good choice because you can use the Underground to get around. Regarding money, best for a 4-day trip would be to simply get enough cash in Pounds for the whole time, except for expenses you know you can pay with plastic. That will save you the time needed to search for a money exchange, and you will probably get a better rate from your home bank than at many places in London (especially the exchange places at the airport). Get the cash in 10 & 20 Pound notes - nothing larger. Consider using an under-the-trousers security belt. Keep your passport and most of your cash in the belt. Use other ID (ex. driving license or state ID card) as daily ID. This is an example but they are sold at luggage shops: http://www.travelsmith.com/jump.jsp?itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&itemID=11019&fromNewSearch=true&mercadoResultId=2 Check with your health insurance to find out if it covers you in Europe. If yes then take proof of coverage with you. If no or not sure then get trip medical insurance, which is cheap and sold by airlines & travel agents. Most European countries have "socialized medicine" for their own citizens, but foreigners have to pay for medical care.

Ravish London
I agree with the people who said that with four days there, there really isn't enough time to do much "exploring" outside London. You might be able to squeeze in a day trip to Stonehenge, but that really will burn the better part of one day. With just four days, you won't be able to see all the "must see" stuff in London, much less do much in the way of exploring. If you're into music, one thing you might want to consider going to is the crosswalk where the Beatles shot the "Abbey Road" album cover. It's actually right outside the studio, a couple of blocks from the St. John's Wood underground station, and it's pretty common to see people "recreating" the album cover on their own. In fact, I got "drafted" into a picture with three brothers from Uraguay. The bus and the "tube" will get you to all of the popular sites. The underground is broken up into "zones". Almost all of the interesting "tourist" things are going to be in zones 1 and 2, and a lot of them are within walking distance of one another. I don't know if you've done any foreign travel, but here's a couple of tips from someone who's done it quite a lot. I don't know if you're flying non-stop, or if you have to change planes, but as soon as you get on the plane that is actually landing in England, set your watch to London time, and try to start living by it. When it's bedtime in London, try to get as much sleep as you can. Most flights from the US arrive early in the morning, and you don't want to spend one of your four days bummed out with jet lag. The UK uses a lot more coins than we do in the us (1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 pence, and £1 and £2 coins). If you don't get in the habit of spending them, you can end up with £15 or £20 in loose change your first day. Been there, done that. Also, many currency exchange places don't take coins. Your last night, see if you can exchange as many coins for notes as you can, or at least a few higher denomination coins. I'd rather bring home one £2 coin than £2 in 5, 10 and 20 pence coins. Flying home results in some odd things happening, due to the time change. The last time I went, I changed planes in Paris. I ended up having breakfast in London, an early lunch in Paris, and ate dinner that night at my normal time in California, which really struck me as weird for some reason.
