How does customs work for Hartford-Canada-London and return?

• If I were to fly from Hartford, CT (BDL) to London (LHR) via either Montreal (YUL) or Toronto (YYZ) on Air Canada, where exactly would I have to go through customs? BDL has no international terminal and the BDL-Canada legs are commuter flights. Would I have to claim & re-check my bags in Canada? I'm a total n00b at traveling internationally...
