How long should I allow to get from Wembley Park Station to London Euston after an England football match?
-
I can see different bits of advice out there, I'm preparing to travel from Wembley Park on the Metropolitan line to Euston Square and then the short walk to London Euston. I'm just not sure how long I can expect to wait to catch the train straight after an England game (v Switzerland on Saturday 4th June, at around 6-50pm). I'm hoping that I'd be comfortably back to London Euston within two hours to catch a 9pm train. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Answer:
I've seen the problems there. The big problem is getting a train! With thousands of people having the same idea as you they will be crowded to over capacity. You can't also walk fast on the quite long walk from the stadium to the tube as you will be blocked in by thousands slowly moving, unless your seat is near an exit and you can get out quickly (unlikely!). However 2 hours sounds OK.......BUT......is always the unknown factor.

Metropolitan Line trains from Wembley Park are very frequent, at least every 7 minutes or so, but expect the station and the trains to be extremely crowded straight after the match, which will slow things down generally. Once you are on the train though, its only about a 15 to 20 minute journey into central London. HOWEVER, bare in mind that in the evening many Metropolitan line trains will terminate at Baker Street and do not continue on to Euston Square. Some will, but most wont. Therefore you may well need to change at Baker Street on to the eastbound Circle or Hammersmith & City line platform to get a train to Euston Square. This will add at least 10 minutes to your journey. But getting to Euston by 9pm should be no problem at all, however busy it may be.

You should allow an hour to get from Wembley Park to Euston. You can take the Metropolitan Line direct to Euston Square (which is across the street from Euston station) or you can take the Jubilee Line to Baker Street, where you'll change to a Circle Line or a Hammersmith & City Line to Euston Square.

The actual train journey is not the problem (although you will have to change trains at Baker Street). The problem is getting from your seat in the stadium to the train platform. The last time I was at Wembley, it took us over two hours to be herded like sheep by the Police from the Stadium to the station entrance. Even then, it took twenty minutes to get into one of the sardine cans - sorry, trains!

Trains will be every 10 minutes or less and take 15-20 minutes. But as everyone will be pouring out of the stadium you might not get on the first one to arrive. Plus you may need to change trains at Baker Street - a lot terminate there. However, 2 hours is PLENTY of time.
