How much is a monthly or weekly Ticket to Gatwick airport cost?

What is the best way to get from Gatwick airport to inner city London?

  • I know there are several options like the Gatwick express train, Southern trains, first capitol, easy bus, and the express coach. I'm hesitant to buy a train ticket as i do not know how big the airport is and how long it might take to get my luggage once I land. Generally speaking what is a quick and cost effective means of traveling from Gatwick airport to inner city London? What would you do?

  • Answer:

From what you've said, I'm going to assume that you've looked at rail ticket website to find out the prices. Now, just because it says that this is the time of the train, and that you can select the exact ticket for the exact train, doesn't mean you have to travel on that train. If the ticket is called an Off-Peak ticket, you can travel anytime after 09:30 in the morning, but not between 16:00 and 19:00. During these times the tickets are Peak. So for example, if you where to book an 'Off-Peak ticket' on the 14:05 from Gatwick to London Victoria, but you missed that train because your bags where late, you can use the train after that, or the one after that... Unless the ticket is an "Advance" fare, you are not limited to the train you appear to have book yourself on. As for the size of Gatwick, you don't need to worry. Once you've passed through Passport Control, you pick up your bags, pass through Customs and are into the Arrivals hall. From there, follow signs for Gatwick station. It's about 400 meter walk. Southern railway are about 10 minutes slower than the Gatwick Express because they stop at East Croydon and Clapham Junction, but a single ticket is only about £8. EDIT: If you've found tickets for £4.50, they will be Advance fares. These mean you must travel on the train that you've booked onto. If you miss that train however, you'll need to buy a new ticket. Buying an Off-Peak or Peak fare gives you the flexablity that you might need at the airport.

Taxi or train - both as quick as each other, but the train might not get you exactly where you want, so taxi - the taxi lanes make private travel quick. :)

Firstly I don't what you mean by the "inner city London" But I give you some suggestions anyway, There are two terminals at Gatwick. there's the South Terminal (where there station is). Allow yourself 20 minutes for clearing Immigration to the station. Then there's the North Terminal, the link to station is by monorail. Where it ends is close to the station. Allow yourself 25 minutes. The coach I don't recommend because of the traffic. Especially in South London. Trains: The Gatwick Express is a non-stop service that goes between the airport and Victoia. Running every 15 minutes, taking 30 minutes. Single (one way) to Victoria £16.90. The Travelcard (day ticket) is pricey (£26). There are cheaper options than this. Southern Trains. Which calls at East Croydon (15 mins later), Clapham Juction (25 mins) and Victoria (34 mins) these trains run every 15 minutes and hourly throughout the night. The single fare is £11 and the Travelcard (valid on their services to London) is £12.30 First Capital Connect (formerly called the Thameslink). These trains calls at East Croydon (15 mins) and London Bridge (30 mins) Again these trains run every 15 minutes from ( 5am - midnight and The run every half hour on a Sunday. Now between the hours of 4:30am and 10:30 pm they run on to Blackfriars, City Thameslink, Farringdon and St Pancras International. The single to London Bridge is £8.90 and elsewhere it's a Travelcard £11 (on FFC trains only to London), You can check out TfL's journey http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/user/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2 Putting in Gatwick and the address where you're going to. If in doubt buy the £12.70 Travelcard which is on BOTH Southern and FCC in to London.

Train is the quickest - 30 minutes to Victoria on Gatwick Express 35 minutes to Victoria on Southern (cheaper) 30 minutes to London Bridge on First Capital Connect 45-50 minutes to St Pancras on First Capital Connect Don't go by road the congestion is horrendous. Catch a taxi when you get off the train in central London www.nationalrail.co.uk

by road! lol

Travel to London Bridge on Southern or First Capital Connect on a Anytime Day single but check for restrictions. Gatwick has 2 terminals with a rail link between them, this can add about 5-10 minutes to the journey but the rail station is just outside the South terminal. Buy your ticket at the station if you are concerned about delays etc. Or use Easybus but that takes you to Fulham Broadway - not quite central london. When in London buy an Oyster card for travel on bus and tube trains.
