How about The Hunterian museum? It's small, unique, in central London, has free admission and virtual tours on its website which you can take a look at from here: http://www.rcseng.ac.uk/about/virtual_tours/index.html#museums I visited it recently and it's not your average museum! I'm sure you could find plenty of angles for your dissertation.

The Geffrye Museum in Shoreditch, situated on Kingsland Road in London is just a short walk from the City of London, Liverpool Station then a five minute bus ride or about a 30 minute walk, an alternative route would be to travel to Stratford, site of the 2012 Olympics and take a train from there to Dalston Kingsland an equivalent walk or bus ride toward the city passes the outside of the museum. The museum collection is based around the furnishings of a typical working class london house from the 1600s to the modern day, with several display areas showing the changes in styles, and the advances in technology, with actual examples of the types of furniture and fittings available. It is a very small museum that during the summer months has a small display based around gardens and gardening. I very relaxing and fascinating way to spend a couple of hours spare time.

There is the Museum Of London in the Docklands area where they detail all the history of the docks and how it came from a hub of industry to a hub of commerce, including the efforts of the dockland workers during the Battle Of Britain and even some information on the slave trade industry.
