In London am I more likely to get mugged on the train or the bus?
-
I take the bus home from school and it takes around 1 hour. I really want to take the train because I can get home in about 20 minutes. The thing is, I have really annoying and stupid protective parents and they won't let me take the train because they think I'll get mugged. I'm 13 and I keep saying about all my friends taking the train and me going with them but they think I'll be a target for muggings because I go to a good private school. Are you more likely to get mugged on the train or bus because I want to see if they are right.

Answer:
There is a slightly greater chance of being mugged on a train than on a bus, and there is a slightly greater chance of being mugged on a train going through south London than other routes, and those slight chances are increased late at night. As SS4 says, muggings in the afternoon are as rare as hen's teeth even on the train lines that are notorious for having one mugging every two months after 11.30pm. There is, of course, a greater chance of being mugged if you are out and about for an hour than if you're only out and about for 20 minutes, and if you're at a stop waiting for a bus that is late because of traffic than if you're waiting at a station for a train that's almost certain to arrive on time. These differences tend to cancel out the risk of muggings on bus versus train. Your parents are being completely neurotic about this. For all practical purposes travelling to and from school by train is perfectly safe. Where on earth have your parents been?

I can't see either of them being a problem at half 3. Just tell your parents that fear of muggers ensures they win

Be sensible with the amount of money you take with you each day, don't take more than you need. Keep it in inside pockets and carry a shoulder bag that you can keep in front of you at all times on the train instead of a backpack. If it was that bad no-one would ride the tube, I doubt you'll be mugged.
I think you are more likely to have pickpockets on trains, especially during rush hour when everyone is clumped together.
No name.
Nobody is going to mug you in broad daylight on a train.

I'd like to know, I'm going in less than a month and I'm scared too!
