How much is a monthly or weekly Ticket to Gatwick airport cost?

Train ticket from Gatwick to London – need to buy in advance online?

  • I’m going from Gatwick airport to London. ‘first capital connect’ seem to be the cheapest. Do I need to buy the train ticket in advance online or can I buy it at the counter after I arrive? Will it cost the same at the counter as it does online? couldn't figure that out from their website. Is there any cheaper service from Gatwick to London? (besides ‘easy bus’ which doesn’t fit my schedule). Thank you for your help. I’m outside the uk so really have no idea how this works.

  • Answer:

You should be able to purchase one from a kiosk or electronic ticket vendor for the same price. I am not aware of any discounted tickets, but they are probably online somewhere. I haven't been through GW in eight years (Heathrow and Stanstead usually), so it may be different now. Certainly won't be any nicer though. The train's nice enough and if you're a Pink Floyd fan you get a nice glimpse of Battersea Power Station (from their Animals album cover). Good luck mate!

I use this website: www.thetrainline.co.uk Its very good, and you can find out about different times of trains and look for cheaper alternatives. You can also just use it to look at train times, then buy from the station on the day.

Tickets bought in advance and at the kiosk at the airport will be the same price. You may get a discount if you have a railcard though. You can get a railcard if you're a pensioner, under 25 or travelling with children. They do work out very good value for money as they can save you a lot on rail travel. There are only 2 main trains to get from Gatwick to London and these are the Gatwick Express (takes 40 minutes and is direct) which goes into Victoria. This is the more expensive option but good if time is important. If you don't mind taking an hour or more or are actually heading to south London (i.e. East Croydon or Clapham Junction) then the local train is the better option as it is cheaper. Both trains leave from the same set of platforms so check the display board for the trains destination. You can't use your local train tickets on the Gatwick Express - these trains are easy to avoid as they have Gatwick Express written all over them in huge letters. As with most airports, they're not in the city itself so train really is the best option otherwise you could be sitting on a bus in traffic for a long time (London traffic in the centre can be very bad indeed).
