What are the London attractions, open or closed?

London airport closed, how to get to London from US?

  • As you all know, London airports are closed and who knows when conditions are going to change. I have a flight scheduled to London in a month and assuming that conditions wont change, where can i fly to and then take a train to UK? Is Netherlands or France airports are open. Which airport I need to fly in and how do I get to London? Please help! PS: I live in US

  • Answer:

Brussels and Paris both have direct Eurostar trains to London St Pancras. From Amsterdam it is a fairly straight forward journey changing trains in Brussells; likewise Cologne. However if airports in England are still closed these trains will be fully booked at least a week ahead www.eurostar.com At present all the above airports are closed too but the situation is fluid. If you were flying now you could fly to Spain and use a combination of trains and ferries from there. Best to ask this question again if necessary in a couple of weeks

Hi Lola, Airports in France, Netherlands, part of Italy, and eastward are closed due to the volcanic ash. Both ferries and Euro star are reporting that they are fully booked into next week. The news is reporting that it is expected to go on for a few more days with another 1 - 2 weeks to clear the backlog which, in theory, should not impact your travel plans. However if does then figuring out what airport to fly into will be irrelevant because the ferries and trains will be fully booked. Instead I my opinion would be to contact your airline to ask what they recommend if you are concerned about your planned trip.

Airports are closed throughout northern Europe. Nobody knows for sure when the skies will be clear again. It is possible there will be interruptions to traffic for as long as the volcano erupts. Normally the prevailing wind is from the SW, so the ash would be clear of Europe. However, we are currently experiencing northerly winds. Some test flights have been carried out successfully yesterday. However, when flights resume, there is a huge backlog to clear. You may be OK in a month.

Do you not read the news in the US? Its not just the UK, but the entire continent that the airspace is closed. Think 9/11 , nine years ago !! But as your travel isn't due in a month, things might change.. so wait it out a bit till at least end of April to see if the restrictions have lifted. But if all else fails, fly into Spain where there is no airspace restrictions there. Then buy a ticket on the train from there to Paris to London.

Just be patient. Part of the problem now is the weather in addition to the volcano. When the weather pattern changes the dust cloud will dissipate and airports will open again. A month is a long time and we have no idea what conditions will be like then.

half the airports in Western Europe are in lockdown, however from what I can tell on the news, Scotland's airports will open soon as the ash cloud moves south. Fly to one of their airports and then get the train down to London. As Aleksandr would say "Simples"
