Where to live- In or outside London?
-
Me and my husband will be moving from Sweden to London, since he's already starting to work there. The big question is deciding which place to live could suit us best; In or outside the city? We both work in communication/media fields, are on our 30's, don't have kids, have more than one pet, like the outdoors, quiet and calm places but with some character and distractions (going to the movies, shopping, good commutation... but not looking much for a nightlife though). Been looking places like Wimbledon, Tunbridge Wells, Guildford, but still don't certain about the right place... really don't want to live in the typical suburbia, dull and uninspired, but either not really looking for the vulnerability and anxiety of London (at least some of the London zones). If someone has some good advice about a nice place(s) that eventually could fit this profile, it really would be great and helpful ;o) thanks!

My advice would be to avoid finding somewhere stuck right in the middle of the City. You'll really hate that. Kingston, Surbiton, Richmond, Wimbledon or Weybridge if you have the money. All excellent places to live, with excellent transport links into Central London and the City. Quiet, leafy streets, with all of the usual high street shops and supermarkets. Maybe try Woking. Abit more upmarket of Guildford. If your looking to be within the Greater London area, maybe try looking at Ruislip, which is alot like some of the places above, just slightly less expensive. South of the Thames; Clapham and Wandsworth have nice bits, and Lambeth is currently undergoing a major face lift. Further out of the centre you have Epsom which is a pretty decent place, but I would advise staying clear of Croydon. Appart from Epsom, Guildford, Woking and Weybridge, all the above places are within the London Travelcard Zones.

High Wycombe is quite nice! Near to countryside and close enough to london. it depends how close you want to live really.. Woking is alright too. But I suppose you really need to think about time you will spend commuting to get to/from work, unless you work where you live.. London can be really nice, there are lots of big parks. Its such a huge city that there is so much variation. I really like Kingston..! But London can also be really yuck, or just far too busy.. I like Surrey is a nice county, lots of nice towns in there.

there's some very nice areas within London that fit your description such as Highgate, Crouch End, Muswell Hill, Hampstead ... look at a map of London and you'll see there's loads of open spaces around this area ... trouble is, they also tend to be expensive for accommodation ... if you look further out to a town outside of London the problem then is that you have both the cost and the time element of commuting back in ... having said that, my daughter moved out to Faversham in Kent, lovely country town, and there's a fast train into London which takes just over an hour if you do decide to look outside of London, look first at where you're going to be working in London and which is the nearest main line train station ... then look at from where trains come into that station ... if you are commuting but are within walking distance of the station you come into not only do you save a lot of commuting time, but also the cost of a Zone 1+2 travelcard

It really depends if you like city or rural life. London is a bustling city. There is every distraction, entertainment venue, food outlet etc you could imagine. Inner London can be a drab place to live if you aren't a city slicker. However, there are leafy suburbs in all directions. I spent a lot of time in SE London. Chislehurst was like a small market town. The traffic is very heavy in London. If you want quick access to the countryside, you need to move away from London. The counties of Surrey. Kent and Hertfordshire are my favourites. They provide many small to medium sized market towns with good rail links to central London. However, commuting is not for everyone.
